Quinnipiac pulls off another upset against Miami
Morgan Manz scored 22 points and 12th-seeded Quinnipiac continued its Cinderella run with an 85-78 win over fourth-seeded Miami in the second round of the NCAA women's tournament on Monday night at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
Quinnipiac, which won its 12th in a row, advances to face No. 1 seed South Carolina on Saturday in a Sweet 16 matchup in Stockton, Calif.
It is the first trip to the Sweet 16 for the Bobcats, who upset fifth-seeded Marquette in the first round and then made a season-high 15 3-pointers to eliminate the Hurricanes.
Jessica Thomas scored 25 points and Keyona Hayes added 21 points for the Hurricanes.
Quinnipiac took a 60-55 lead into the fourth quarter but was unable to pull away until the final minute.
The Bobcats led 71-68 with five minutes to play after a layup from Hayes. But Adily Martucci knocked down a big 3-pointer from the right wing with a minute to play and Aryn McClure and Manz hit clutch free throws in the final minute to help Quinnipiac prevail.
McClure finished with 15 points, and Paula Strautmane and Sarah Shewan each added 11 points for Quinnipiac. Strautmane also grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Bobcats led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter but managed only three in the final three minutes of the half. Miami cut into the deficit, with Thomas hitting back-to-back jumpers in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter to trim Quinnipiac's lead to 43-36.
Miami outrebounded Quinnipiac 39-34 but couldn't keep up from beyond the 3-point arc. The Bobcats outscored the Hurricanes 45-15 on 3-pointers.
