Top-seeded Rybarikova advances in Austria tournament

Top-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia breezed past Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-3 in their first-round match Tuesday at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz in Linz, Austria.

Rybarikova, a Wimbledon semifinalist this year and world No. 28, broke serve against Hogenkamp five times and won the last four games to complete their 91-minute match.

Third-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands was upset by American Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 7-6 (4) in their first-round match.

Fourth-seeded Anett Kontaveit of Estonia fell to Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu 7-6 (8), 6-3. Seventh-seeded German Tatjana Maria eased past Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-1, 6-4.

Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia defeated Puerto Rican and 2016 Olympic gold medal winner Monica Puig in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Tomljanovic, the former world No. 47, was down a break twice in the second set before prevailing and did not face a break point in the final set.

"When I broke at 1-2 down (in the second set), I felt I was back in it. I knew that if I just kept my level up, it would be a good match," Tomljanovic said.

Other first-round results include Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova beating England's Naomi Broady in a three-set affair 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4, Croatia's Jana Fett beating Denisa Allertova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-2 and Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova ousted Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2, 7-5.
