Torino F.C. (11-12-9) will host A.C. ChievoVerona (11-5-16) in one of the seven Serie A fixtures in a busy Sunday. Torino held to a late draw against F.C. Crotone (5-6-21) in the last round, whereas Chievo lost for the fourth time in a row when they succumbed 4-0 at Cagliari Calcio (11-5-16). Torino beat Chievo 2-1 in the reverse fixture, with both goals scored by Iago Falque in a space of two first-half minutes. Roberto Inglese revived some hope for Chievo five minutes from time, but they ended the game with ten-men following Fabrizio Cacciatore's sending off because of a dissent.
Juan Iturbe, Leandro Castán, and Cristian Molinaro will face an uphill task to return to full fitness for Torino, while Joel Obi, who is yet to feature in 2017, is out of the game. No less than eight Chievo players are on the injury list, including joint top-scorer Inglese and influential midfielder Valter Birsa.
Andrea Belotti remained joint top of the goalscoring list courtesy of a penalty-kick goal, his 25th of the season, against Crotone, but the relegation-threatened side shared the spoils late on to force Torino to settle for their third draw in four games. Joe Hart, who joined the club at the start of the season on loan from Manchester City, continues to struggle for keeping a clean sheet and made the headlines at home when Liverpool's coach Jurgen Klopp denied the rumors that he wanted to bring the England international back into the Premier League. Torino will face two daunting games against leaders Juventus F.C. (26-2-4) and S.S.C. Napoli (21-7-4) in May. They are level on points with ninth-placed U.C. Sampdoria (12-9-11), while they hold a five-point advantage over Udinese Calcio (11-7-14), who sit eleventh in the standings.
After dispatching FC Empoli (6-8-18) 4-0 in early March, Chievo struggled for results. With the exception of table-toppers Juventus, the four teams who beat Chievo are in the bottom half of the table in a dire month for Rolando Maran's side. They conceded 12 goals in the losing streak, while only scoring twice. The first-half against Cagliari was a catastrophic one for Chievo. They were three goals down in 40 minutes, while Maran forced to make two early changes because of injuries to Nicolás Spolli and Riccardo Meggiorini. Chievo will end the campaign with tricky fixtures against top five sides AS Roma (23-3-6) and Atalanta BC (18-6-8) in the final two weeks of the season.
1. Only the top three teams scored more than tenth-placed Torino this season. Sinisa Mihajlovic's team find the net 60 times in 32 games.
2. Only bottom-placed teams Delfino Pescara 1936 (2-8-22) and U.S. Città di Palermo (3-7-22) conceded more goals from headers than Torino (9) this season. Torino (15) are also ahead in more goals scored with headers.
3. Chievo are one of the two Serie A teams – alongside Sampdoria – who are yet to score following a crossed free-kick.
Torino will return to winning ways to inflict Chievo's fifth straight defeat.
Torino 2, Chievo 0
