The trick with baseball is finding value on the best teams and following those teams all season long. This power ranking will be based on “against the spread” performance from week to week. In baseball, “the spread” is the “run line.” The money line is the straight up record. When a team wins a regular season game, they have just beaten the money line, but possibly, did not beat the run line.

This ranking is not a popularity contest or which team has the best lineup or the best rotation. This ranking is about beating the spread, (money line/run line). We will base this ranking from week to week on who has a better record against the spread and the team’s performance from a betting perspective. In baseball, this usually means that the best teams, with the best records, are the decisively better teams to bet on, however, there are exceptions.

1. Seattle Mariners

World Series Odds: +5000
Record: 9-2 SU and 9-2-0 Rune Line
Previous Rank: 1

The Seattle Mariners are the hottest team in baseball and they can’t stop hitting home runs. The verdict is still out on the pitching, but right now, this team is on fire.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers

World Series Odds: +700
Record: 8-2 SU and 6-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 4th

The Dodgers have taken a while to find their groove but are now fitting in quite nicely. Kershaw is no longer the key, he is a bonus.

3. Milwaukee Brewers

World Series Odds: +1200
Record: 8-2 SU and 5-5-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 5th

The Brewers are on a one games losing streak after winning 8 of 10. We knew they would be good, and it was all about pitching, not hitting, they have the hitting to boot.

4. Detroit Tigers

World Series Odds: +20000
Record: 7-3 SU and 7-3-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 13th

The Detroit Tigers are a big surprise so far this season and has won five in a row, they are a money line grab. There pitching is young, that’s a plus, their hitting is old, that’s a downer.

5. Tampa Bay Rays

World Series Odds: +2200
Record: 7-3 SU and 7-3-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 3rd

The Rays are going to be really good this season, but they must be good to overcome the toughest division in all of baseball.

6. New York Mets

World Series Odds: +1800
Record: 6-3 SU and 6-3-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 7th

The Mets are playing fantastic baseball considering the injuries they are weathering. The sky may be the limit for a young and talented rotation along with big bats.

7. Philadelphia Phillies

World Series Odds: +750
Record: 6-2 SU and 5-3-0 Rune Line
Previous Rank: 2nd

The Phils are 6-2 in as many games played. This team is going to be the powerhouse in the NL East, but they have stiff competition in the Mets.

8. San Diego Padres

World Series Odds: +5000
Record: 6-4 SU and 6-4-0 Run line
Previous Rank: 6th

The Padres look good now, and their bats look better than average, their pitching will not hold up.  Look for the run line the opposite way.

9. Cleveland Indians

World Series Odds: +1400
Record: 6-3 SU and 5-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 22nd

The Indians have big bats and that’s what’s keeping them in the top 10. They will fall out quickly.

10. Oakland Athletics

World Series Odds: +2800
Record: 6-7 SU and 7-6-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 8th

The A’s play in a division that’s in turmoil. The Mariners are 9-2, who would have seen that coming. The Astros are miserable against the run line. This team can win this division, look for them to be above .500 all season.

11. Arizona Diamondbacks

World Series Odds: +6600
Record: 5-5 SU and 7-3-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 19th

The D Backs are a surprisingly good team against the run line, they keep it close and that’s what matters when playing the dog.

12. Texas Rangers

World Series Odds: +20000
Record: 5-5 SU and 6-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 12th

We thought the Rangers were awful and we still think this, however, the division says that anybody can make their mark early. Do not count on this team, they will lose 85 + games.

13. New York Yankees

World Series Odds: +600
Record: 5-4 SU and 5-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 23rd

The Yankees are not dead, and they have never been dead. After winning three in a row they have their confidence back and they will continue to get better as the team gets healthy.

14. Minnesota Twins

World Series Odds: +4000
Record: 5-3 SU and 4-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 11th

The Twins are a mystery, we think worse of them than maybe they are, but we are gun shy when it comes to clunking down the money. The run line is making no money, stay away.

15. Pittsburgh Pirates

World Series Odds: +6600
Record: 5-3 SU and 4-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 20th

The Pirates are trying to stay ahead of the curve in the NL Central, but it’s going to be tough with the Cards, Cubs, and Brewers. This team will lose 80+ when it all said and done.

16. Atlanta Braves

World Series Odds: +2200
Record: 5-4 SU and 4-5-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 30th

The Braves have turned the corner and they are typically slow starters. They will be a contender, don’t give up yet.

17. Houston Astros

World Series Odds: +550
Record: 5-5 SU and 2-8-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 27th

The Astros are a disaster against the run line and it would be wise to go the other way when laying the number. This team is much too talented to be bad very long.

18. St. Louis Cardinals

World Series Odds: +1600
Record: 4-6 SU and 6-3-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 18th

The Cardinals are struggling in their first 10 games and that’s a bad sign. They have some hole to fill but failed to fill them, can they take care of business? We don’t know and for that reason, we say caution, they could lose a few more than previously thought.

19. Los Angeles Angels

World Series Odds: +6600
Record: 4-6 SU and 6-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 17th

Mike Trout is a beast and the best player in baseball. The Angels are a work in progress and will definitely win more than they lose. Keep a close eye on this team, they hit well and have a great pen.

20. Baltimore Orioles

World Series Odds: +25000
Record: 4-5 SU and 4-5-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 10th

The Orioles are not going to be the Vegas Golden Knights, lose that thought right now. They may win more than 75, but highly doubtful.

21. Washington Nationals

World Series Odds: +1800
Record: 4-4 SU and 3-5-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 28th

The Nationals can’t stay in games, they have no bullpen, it’s extremely volatile. They are a great first half bet and a great bet against in the second half.

22. Miami Marlins

World Series Odds: +50000
Record: 3-7 SU and 5-5-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 15th

This team may win 60 games. The Marlins are a great team to have on your top five, to bet against.

23. San Francisco Giants

World Series Odds: +15000
Record: 3-7 SU and 4-6-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 26th

The Giants are still old and getting older, what happened to the great teams of old at McCovey Cove? This team has started out 3-7 and the road is not going to get any easier in the NL East.

24. Toronto Blue Jays

World Series Odds: +8000
Record: 3-8 SU and 4-7-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 16th

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost four in a row and they could lose the next ten and it wouldn’t be a big surprise.

25. Colorado Rockies

World Series Odds: +2800
Record: 3-7 SU and 3-7-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 14th

The Rockies are the worst team in the NL West and they will most likely finish last. They sold everybody and it’s killing them.

26. Boston Red Sox

World Series Odds: +750
Record: 3-8 SU and 1-10-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 29th

The Red Sox will get better, they have to! We believe in the champs and they have way too much talent to stay down here, however, their pitching looks tired, they need help.

27. Kansas City Royals

World Series Odds: +5000
Record: 2-6 SU and 4-4-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 9th

The Royals are a bad baseball team and they will prove it over the course of this season. George Brett gave up last season and he shows no signs of progress. This team will lose 90+ games.

28. Chicago White Sox

World Series Odds: +7500
Record: 3-5 SU and 3-5-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 24th

The Sox are a work in progress with young talent, they will get better before getting worse.

29. Chicago Cubs

World Series Odds: +1800
Record: 2-7 SU and 2-7-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 25th

The Cubs are awful and it’s no surprise, they do this every year. Lay off now but jump back in when they get on a roll, it will happen.

30. Cincinnati Reds

World Series Odds: +8000
Record: 1-8 SU and 3-6-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 21st

The Reds are not the worst team in baseball, they will finish ahead of more than a couple of teams but right now, they don’t look too appealing. They have no offense and with young pitching that kills them, especially against the run line.
