The trick with baseball is finding value on the best teams and following those teams all season long. This power ranking will be based on “against the spread” performance from week to week. In baseball, “the spread” is the “run line.” The money line is the straight up record. When a team wins a regular season game, they have just beaten the money line, but possibly, did not beat the run line.

This ranking is not a popularity contest or which team has the best lineup or the best rotation. This ranking is about beating the spread, (money line/run line). We will base this ranking from week to week on who has a better record against the spread and the team’s performance from a betting perspective. In baseball, this usually means that the best teams, with the best records, are the decisively better teams to bet on, however, there are exceptions.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

World Series Odds: +500
Record: 27-16 SU and 18-25-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 10

And sure enough, here are the ‘boys in blue’. The Dodgers are on top and just might stay. A 7-3 for the last 10 really helped. Keep hitting, keep pitching and the Dodgers will run away with the NL West.

2. Houston Astros

World Series Odds: +400
Record: 26-15 SU and 20-21-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 9

The Astros are even better, having gone 8-2 in the last 10 with a 16-4 home record! Do the math, this team is on pace to lose less than 16 at home!

3. Minnesota Twins

World Series Odds: +2000
Record: 25-14 SU and 21-18-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 3

The Twins have reversed roles with the Indians. Last season the Indians owned the division, this year, the Twins look really good.

4. Tampa Bay Rays

World Series Odds: +1200
Record: 24-15 SU and 24-15-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 1

Tampa has a great rotation that’s still worthy of a rune line bet but, in the end, can they hang in the AL East? It’s not looking good.

5. Chicago Cubs

World Series Odds: +1000
Record: 24-14 SU and 20-18-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 2

The Cubs are rocking at the right time. The Cardinals had a bad week, the Brewers had a good week and Pittsburgh won’t be here for the long haul. This Cubs team is solid and a great bet.

6. New York Yankees

World Series Odds: +600
Record: 24-16 SU and 21-19-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 6

The Yankees will finish with the best record in baseball! You heard it here. This team is a great team and one that bettors will love in the “dog days’.

7. Milwaukee Brewers

World Series Odds: +1400
Record: 24-18 SU and 22-20-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 15

The Brewers picked it up and are on a mini-comeback. This team has players, they have bats, but lack depth on the mound, it will snag them late in the season.

8. Philadelphia Phillies

World Series Odds: +900
Record: 23-16 SU and 21-18-0 Rune Line
Previous Rank: 7

The Phillies are not quite there, and, in the NL East, they had better pick it up. The Braves are talented, is Harper enough… Maybe.

9. Arizona Diamondbacks

World Series Odds: +3300
Record: 22-19 SU and 25-16-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 4

The D Backs took a dump and they are awful at home. They are still a nice story but be careful.

10. St. Louis Cardinals

World Series Odds: +1600
Record: 22-19 SU and 24-17-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 5

The Cardinals are still a great bet on the run line, but a mess in the division. They will improve, stay faithful Cards fans.

11. San Diego Padres

World Series Odds: +3300
Record: 22-19 SU and 22-19-0 Run line
Previous Rank: 13

The Padres are strong enough to say “bet them” but pick your spots.

12. Boston Red Sox

World Series Odds: +1000
Record: 22-19 SU and 18-23-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 19

The Red Sox! What a turnaround and we have called it for six weeks. This team has a WS winning lineup, they aren’t dead! Bet them.

13. Cleveland Indians

World Series Odds: +1800
Record: 21-18 SU and 19-20-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 8

The Indians have the big wood and that’s all folks, it’s not enough.

14. Atlanta Braves

World Series Odds: +2000
Record: 21-20 SU and 20-21-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 14

The Braves are winning enough to stay afloat but sub .500 on the betting line. Be patient, wait them out and bet out of the division.

15. Seattle Mariners

World Series Odds: +5000
Record: 20-23 SU and 23-20-0 Rune Line
Previous Rank: 17

The Mariners are not awful, but they are not good. They need a “real” skipper, they need pitching, and Felix must go. Really, he won’t go on his own, so pay him, and boot him. Cut your losses.

16. Pittsburgh Pirates

World Series Odds: +5000
Record: 20-17 SU and 19-18-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 11

The Pirates are 7-3 in the last 10. Who expected this? Pick your spots, they are a very inconsistent bet.

17. Los Angeles Angels

World Series Odds: +8000
Record: 19-21 SU and 24-16-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 21

The Angels are a fantastic bet against the run line. This team has heart and they still have the best player in the game.

18. New York Mets

World Series Odds: +2800
Record: 19-20 SU and 21-18-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 18

The Mets are not totally a zoo, but close. When will this wealthy team spend money? Probably never.

19. Colorado Rockies

World Series Odds: +6600
Record: 19-21 SU and 19-21-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 23

The Rockies are a mystery and who knows if they have much in the tank. It looks as if they will get worse before they get better.

20. Oakland Athletics

World Series Odds: +8000
Record: 19-23 SU and 17-25-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 27

The A’s are not very good, but they play in the AL West. That’s good news for everyone. Houston will not be caught but the A’s have the staff if they can get it together.

21. Cincinnati Reds

World Series Odds: +20000
Record: 18-23 SU and 23-18-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 26

The Reds played .500 ball this past week and that’s better than expected. They are still a better bet against than for.

22. Detroit Tigers

World Series Odds: +25000
Record: 18-20 SU and 19-19-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 16

The Tigers are right there in the middle of the pack and going nowhere. Their pitching is struggling, and the sticks are quiet.

23. Chicago White Sox

World Series Odds: +20000
Record: 18-21 SU and 18-21-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 20

The White Sox are playing in a bad division with some talent but have no leadership whatsoever. This team is on its way to at least 80 losses; making for a bad bet.

24. Texas Rangers

World Series Odds: +15000
Record: 17-21 SU and 21-17-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 12

The Rangers are no longer the great run line bet. They are bad all the way around and anyway you slice it. Bet against this team if you want to win money.

25. San Francisco Giants

World Series Odds: +20000
Record: 17-23 SU and 18-22-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 24

The Giants are still a mess and nowhere worthy of betting on. Bet against them, be careful against the run line.

26. Toronto Blue Jays

World Series Odds: +20000
Record: 16-24 SU and 18-22-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 22

“The Toronto Blue Jays are going nowhere and quickly.” This is what we said last week, and man were they awful! This team is one of the worst in baseball and it shows. The problem—run line, they aren’t that bad. Pick your spots and win with this team.

27. Washington Nationals

World Series Odds: +3300
Record: 16-24 SU and 14-26-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 25

The Nationals have had two bad weeks and things look bleak for this team. They are a great bet against the run line; they get blown out often.

28. Kansas City Royals

World Series Odds: +150000
Record: 14-27 SU and 21-20-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 29

Just as with the Texas Rangers, the Royals are finally showing their true colors. This is a bad baseball team and they are going to get worse.

29. Baltimore Orioles

World Series Odds: +100000
Record: 14-26 SU and 17-23-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 28

The Orioles are another team that refuses to get blown out. Be very careful betting against them on the run line but money line—bet against.

30. Miami Marlins

World Series Odds: +100000
Record: 10-29 SU and 14-25-0 Run Line
Previous Rank: 30

The worst team in the majors and it’s not close. This team is the worst team in a very long time. They are awful. They are on pace to lose close to 130 games! But against them and stay consistent, you will win a small fortune when it’s all said and done.

About the Author

Having lived in several different states I am never quite sure where I should say that I am from! I was born in WA. State. I did not grow up there. My family moved to Idaho when I was a young boy, where we lived for 11 years. As a result of my fathers occupation; I have had the privilage to experience many states and different cultures around the country.

I have lived in WA, OR, CA, ID, CO, KS, NY, MO, TX, FL, IN, NV, AZ, and Hawaii. I have also lived in Puerto Rico, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. I have managed to visit or live in, 49 of our great states and travel extensively throughout Central America. My travels have taken me to such places as Sinaloa, Chiapas, Myan ruins in Guatemala, and many, many others.  I believe that I have had the honor to visit every Mexican state.

I am an English teacher by trade and love helping others improve thir lives through education. I have taught for institutions such as The University of Washington (Go Huskies) Berlitz, and a few other international language academies. I have obtained many degrees in the school of hard knocks, by way of old fashioned experience!  Such as driving taxi, working at McDonalds, working for giant retailers as well as giant casinos! A jack of all trades for sure.

I love sports! My passion is sports. I love talking about it, arguing about it, following and keeping up with the current state of affairs. Having lived in many places helps me connect with many different fan bases. As a writer, this is a real advantage to have. I can connect with a Yankees fan, or a Chargers fan.  I love it and I hope to continue to give readers a different perspective than the average, run of the mill story will give them.

As you read my stories; I hope you enjoy them. I hope they make you think, maybe make you happy and even make you mad! As you read further you may discover that over the years; I have been influenced by people such as Jim Rome, or Colin Cowherd. These are the kinds of folks that make me think and make me see sports differently.
