2018-2019 Scores&Stats MLB Betting Power Rankings: Week 9
by Brad Mullins Scores & Statson
The trick with baseball is finding value on the best teams and following those teams all season long. This power ranking will be based on “against the spread” performance from week to week. In baseball, “the spread” is the “run line.” The money line is the straight up record. When a team wins a regular season game, they have just beaten the money line, but possibly, did not beat the run line.
This ranking is not a popularity contest or which team has the best lineup or the best rotation. This ranking is about beating the spread, (money line/run line). We will base this ranking from week to week on who has a better record against the spread and the team’s performance from a betting perspective. In baseball, this usually means that the best teams, with the best records, are the decisively better teams to bet on, however, there are exceptions.
World Series Odds: +1400 Record: 36-16 SU and 30-22-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 3
The Twins haven’t missed a beat, literally. This team went 6-0 on the week and they are clearly in the driver’s seat in the AL, for that matter they’re in the driver's seat in all of MLB. This team is beating the ML as well as the RL. When a team is hot, bet them.
World Series Odds: +500 Record: 35-18 SU and 26-27-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 2
The Dodgers lost one game this week and ended with a sweep over the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are not that special, so, we must be cautious on the RL, however, this team is winning and that means money!
World Series Odds: +1200 Record: 31-19 SU and 30-20-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 6
Tampa lost two games this week and keep getting better, unfortunately, they are dealing with the Yankees. In the end, the Yankees are the more talented team but continue keeping this team on your list of great bets.
World Series Odds: +1200 Record: 30-21 SU and 25-26-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 7
The Cubs stay right here at number seven by default. After going 3-4 this past week one would think they would fall, but not so fast. There are other horses in this race and that matters here. Be careful with the Cubs, they can crown you king one night and make the Pope cuss the next!
World Series Odds: +1400 Record: 30-24 SU and 28-26-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 4
The Brewers are hampered with inconsistent pitching and that kills the bettor. Bettors look for outstanding performances on the mound. The verdict is still out on this team, they are talented, but are they talented enough? Time will tell.
World Series Odds: +7500 Record: 28-25 SU and 26-27-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 18
“The A’s are not hitting well, and their pitching needs a house cleaning, but this always happens to this team. Bet against this week.” We have no problem calling ourselves on the carpet! We missed this one, bad! The A’s are playing rock-solid baseball and if it continues, they will give H Town a run for their money.
World Series Odds: +3500 Record: 28-25 SU and 26-27-0 Run line Previous Rank: 16
“The Padres had a not so great week but who knows, maybe they put together a mini streak.” We also have no problem reminding you when we were on track. The Padres won 5 games last week and look as if they are for real.
World Series Odds: +1000 Record: 28-25 SU and 22-31-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 14
The Red Sox had a solid week but still a shaky bet on the run line, they’re barely a good bet on the money line. We have said it for eight weeks; this team will figure it out, their much too talented to lay down.
World Series Odds: +2800 Record: 26-26 SU and 25-27-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 23
The Mets are a borderline disaster, they are certainly disaster waiting to happen. We can’t recommend betting them and would have to bet against them if pressed. They are winning half their games, that makes betting tough. Be careful.
World Series Odds: +100000 Record: 16-34 SU and 21-29-0 Run Line Previous Rank: 30
The Marlins were once thought of as the worst team in baseball but hold on; there is another stinker in the fray and it looks like Baltimore takes the cake. The Marlins are not going to get better so don’t assume you know what that makes us when we do!
