The Chicago White Sox claimed first baseman A.J. Reed off waivers from the Houston Astros on Monday.
Reed, 26, is a former top prospect who has hit .153 (20-for-131) with three homers and eight RBIs in 48 games in the big leagues. The White Sox are expected to send him to Triple-A Charlotte.
This season, Reed hit .224 with 12 homers and 35 RBIs in 56 games with Triple-A Round Rock. He had been with the Astros organization since 2014, when he was a second-round pick out of Kentucky, where he was the 2014 Golden Spikes Award winner.
