Who’s Hot and Who’s Cold in the MLB

By Ryan Knuppel

We are now two and a half weeks into the Major League Baseball season and there are some surprising teams leading their respective divisions. In this article, we will take a look at two teams that are starting the year on hot streaks and two teams that are downright playing bad ball! We will also take a look at 2 players that are starting out the year hot that may benefit all of the daily fantasy sports players!

Who’s Hot?

Baltimore Orioles -The Baltimore Orioles are in first place in the American League East and doing so with a combination of reliable innings from their starting pitchers and having a very potent offense that is putting up a .250 batting average as a team, which is 4th in the entire American League. They have played long ball this year, hitting 19 home runs, which is 2nd in the American League and have scored 56 runs in 12 games.

Minnesota Twins - The Minnesota Twins have one of the hottest pitching staffs in the majors and that may come as a shock to you but numbers don’t lie! They have the lowest ERA in the American League, and as a matter of fact, they have the lowest ERA in the entire MLB with 2.46 ERA. As a team, they have only allowed 37 runs, which is 16 points lower than the MLB average of 53 runs allowed per team. The Twins are in second place in the AL Central and with pitching as good as they are getting right now, this team could contend for the pennant late in the season!

Who’s Not?

Toronto Blue Jays - The Toronto Blue Jays are struggling this year at the plate, only scoring 38 runs on the season, which is the lowest in the entire MLB. As a team, they are only batting .212 avg. and are in the last place in the American League East putting up the worst record in the majors at 2-11. The Jays just put Josh Donaldson on the disabled list with a calf injury, and their pitching staff has been dismantled due to injuries as well. Starter J.A. Happ is dealing with an elbow injury that forced him out of the game on Sunday against the O’s. Starter Aaron Sanchez was placed on the disabled list with a lingering blister that will put him on the sideline for at least 10 days.

Texas Rangers - I’m not sure if I should put the Texas Rangers in the Who’s Not or in the Who’s Hot? Reason being, their offense has scored 62 runs this year, which is the best in the American League. They have hit 20 home runs this year, which is the most in the American League. The downside to the Rangers is they have allowed 60 runs from their pitching staff, which is the 4th most in the American League. This team has the potential and is surrounded by young talent, so if they can get some quality innings from their starters, this team could be in the “Who’s Hot” section in a few weeks!

Players To Watch!

Eric Thames (Milwaukee Brewers) - Eric Thames is in his 4th season in the majors and this kid is legit! He is leading the majors in home runs and has hit home runs in 5 straight games, hitting for a  .368 batting average and has a .455 OBA. The 30-year-old 1st baseman is routinely under 5% owned in daily fantasy sports, mainly because no one has heard of this kid because he plays on the Milwaukee Brewers, where Ryan Braun gets all the attention. If you play DFS, you have to find a way to get this guy in your lineup and watch him throughout the season!

Marcell Ozuna (Miami Marlins) - The Miami Marlins Centerfielder Marcell Ozuna is HOT! This guy is hitting 3rd in the majors with a .404 batting average, he is second in the majors with 5 home runs and is 1st in the majors with 18 RBI’s. If he continues to swing the bat like he is, we have a legitimate chance to see a Triple Crown winner this year!
