The new NBA season got underway on Tuesday night with the Cleveland Cavaliers edging out the Boston Celtics 102-99 in a battle between the top two contenders to win the Eastern Conference this season. Over in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets made an early statement that they are serious about overtaking Golden State at the top team on this side of the bracket with a tight 122-121 victory against the Warriors.

Projected NBA win totals with corresponding moneyline odds for the ‘OVER/UNDER’ play have been set for quite some time, but the trick to making some serious money on these betting props is to find the best value in the numbers right as the new season is set to get underway. I have come up with my top-valued play in both the NBA Eastern and Western Conference.

‘Trust the Process’ became the catch phrase during Philadelphia’s recent rebuilding phase as the team went on to win 19 games in 2014 and 18 games in 2015 before sinking to just 10 wins two years ago. There were a few signs that the process might be working with a record of 28-54 last year, but with young budding stars such as Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz on the roster, the time to put up or shut hit is now for the City of Brotherly Love.

The 76ers’ projected win total for this season has been set at 38.5 with even -110 moneyline odds for a bet on either the OVER or the UNDER. The expectation level is much higher than that with head coach Brett Brown eyeing a return to the postseason for the first time since the 2011/2012 season.

The talent is there to easily surpass 38 wins this season, but the long-term health of Philly’s top players is what keeps this bandwagon from being standing room only. Nobody has a crystal ball as to whether or not Embiid can last a whole season or whether or not Simmons is fully recovered from an injury that sidelined him his entire rookie year. That being said, I have trusted the process with this franchise and I am now going to trust the results with a play on the OVER in this prop.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are another team that is poised to take a big step forward after posting fewer than 31 victories in each of their last three seasons. Last year they went 31-51, which was their best effort since winning 40 games in 2014. You would have to go all the way back to 2004/2005 to find the last time this franchise posted a winning record.

The current betting odds that Minnesota’s win total goes OVER 46.5 games is set at -155 and the moneyline odds on the UNDER are set at +135. With center Karl-Anthony Towns, shooting guard Andrew Wiggins and point guard Zach LaVine already in place, the Timberwolves added Jimmy Butler and Jamal Crawford this offseason to try and bring some serious offensive scoring power to a lineup that was ranked 15th in the NBA last season with an average of 105.6 points per game.

In the past, we have seen an average NBA team quickly turn into a very good team with the addition of just one quality player. Add in the fact that Minnesota also has Kris Dunn waiting in the wings to make a bigger impact this season and all I see is dollar signs with another team living up to all the early hype by exceeding its elevated win total this year.
