Finding Value in The NBA Futures to Win The Championship
by Dave Schwab Scores & Statson
The NBA regular season came to a close on Wednesday night to set the final field for this year’s playoffs. The top eight teams in both the Eastern and Western Conference will now take aim at making their way through the first three rounds of best-of-seven series to earn a spot in the 2019 NBA Finals and a chance to play for a world title.
It is tough to call the defending NBA Champion Golden State Warriors as a top-value pick when you consider that you would have to risk losing $227 to win $100 betting on them to win again. However, the Warriors have been prohibitive favorites to win their fourth NBA title in five seasons ever since they swept Cleveland in last year’s NBA Finals.
It would be hard to bet against Golden State when you consider the lineup it brings into its opening round matchup against the Pacific rival LA Clippers as the top seed in the West. The Warriors were not as dominant as they have been in the past with a regular season record of 57-25, but the addition of DeMarcus Cousins to a team that already has Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green paints a pretty ominous picture for any team trying to take them down.
NBA 2019 Championship - Top Valued Contenders
You could put the Milwaukee Bucks at the top of the contender’s list as the top seed in the East. The Bucks posted the best record in the NBA this season at 60-22 behind league MVP favorite Giannis Antetokounmpo. While The Greek Freak is the main reason why Milwaukee is set as a +700 second-favorite to win the NBA Championship, the rest of the supporting cast is filled with veteran talent that brings a wealth of playoff experience to the table.
The Bucks faced the Golden State twice in the regular season with the road team winning both games straight-up and against the spread.
The only other team with solid value in the contender’s category would be the Houston Rockets as +1200 fourth-favorites to win this year’s title. The Rockets slipped to fourth in the final standings despite posting an 8-2 record over their last 10 games. This sets up a possible matchup against Golden State in the conference semifinals. These two teams met in last season’s conference finals with the Warriors squeezing out a 4-3 series win. The combination of James Harden and a healthy Chris Paul could have what it takes to get past Golden State this time around.
NBA 2019 Championship - The Best of the Rest
The Toronto Raptors are the No. 2 seed in the East and their betting odds to win it all are third-best on the list at +900. However, with Milwaukee standing in the way much of that value is lost. The addition of Kawhi Leonard to this year’s lineup gives Toronto some hope that it can avoid the early playoffs exit that has plagued this team in the past.
The Denver Nuggets were one of the biggest surprises this season at 54-28 to earn the No. 2 seed in the West. Their betting odds to win this year’s NBA Championship are set at +1800, but it could be too tall of a task getting past Golden State or even Houston in the West.
