Duke sophomore guard Tre Jones is among the four finalists for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award announced Monday.
Marcus Garrett of Kansas, Mark Vital of Baylor and Kentucky point guard Ashton Hagans joined Jones as candidates for the honor, with a winner to be announced April 1.
"Each of these finalists enjoyed an incredible season, and all of them deserve to be a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year finalist," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. "Their tenacity embodies the spirit of this award, and although we won't see them in postseason play, we believe it is important to still honor their accomplishments."
Duke players have won the national defensive player of the year award nine times. Jones swept the ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards for the 2019-20 season.
Garrett averaged 1.8 steals and 4.5 deflections per game this season, including 6.9 deflections in his last nine outings for top-ranked Kansas. He was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Vital registered 50 steals and 17 blocks and Hagans, last season's co-SEC Defensive Player of the Year, had 58 steals in 2019-20.
