Michigan State sophomore forward Thomas Kithier broke his nose during practice Wednesday.

Kithier, who was struck by an inadvertent elbow, will wear a protective mask and is not expected to miss any time.

The No. 1 Spartans open the 2019-20 season Tuesday against No. 2 Kentucky at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Kithier played in 31 games off the bench in 2018-19, averaging 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per game.

The Spartans are already short-handed. Senior guard Joshua Langford is out until at least January with a stress injury in his foot, and senior guard Kyle Ahrens' status for Tuesday is uncertain due to a high ankle sprain.
