Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Mark Madsen has been hired as the new head coach at Utah Valley, ESPN reported Sunday.

Madsen, 43, replaces Mark Pope, who was hired at BYU after leading the Wolverines to a 25-10 season in 2018-19.

Madsen played nine seasons in the NBA from 2000-09, winning two championships in three years with the Lakers before playing the rest of his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Madsen's bench experience includes serving as an assistant coach for the Lakers for two seasons under Byron Scott (2014-16) and three under Luke Walton (2016-19). He was also head coach of the Lakers' G League team for a season and an assistant coach at his alma mater Stanford in 2012-13.

Utah Valley competes in the Western Athletic Conference.
