College Football Bowl Picks: Opening Day Dec. 15th Bowls
by Doug Upstone Scores & Statson
If you are a college football fan, this is one of the best times of the year. We have 40 bowls spread over 24 days and the betting opportunities at Intertops sportsbook and other sportsbooks are virtually endless.
The day will start with the Celebration Bowl on ABC, with an FCS matchup, featuring the MEAC and SWAC champions.
The first FBS Bowl will be the CURE Bowl in Orlando, where a pair of Louisiana teams will do battle.
Thirty minutes later it's off to the "Land of Enchantment" for the New Mexico Bowl. This will be one of two bowl games where the head coach left for greener pastures (money) and that always makes handicapping harder, especially when the team is favored like Utah State is.
The other such contest where is a coach has left will be the nightcap, where Appalachian State will play Middle Tennessee in the New Orleans Bowl. This is one of five bowls to feature two squads that played in conference championships.
The Camellia Bowl matchup features the tightest odds and lowest total of the five FBS bowls Saturday.
The Las Vegas Bowl is a Mountain West vs. Pac-12 conflict and of late the Pac-12 is just 1-4 SU and ATS. Here are the picks and all odds are courtesy of Intertops.
Betting odds: North Carolina A&T -7.5, Alcorn State +7.5, Total:47
College Football Free Pick: North Carolina A&T is the stronger team, but we could not help but notice Alcorn State has the No.8 rushing game in FCS and they led that level of football in sacks (51) and tackles for loss (111). Take the points.
Betting odds: Utah State -8.5, North Texas +8.5, Total:67
College Football Free Pick: Utah State had a great season 10-2, with both losses book-ending their regular season, the last keeping them out of the MWC championship. North Texas was a modest disappointment at 9-3. We'll take the points with the Mean Green in part because the Aggies lost their coach.
College Football Free Pick: Louisiana has a couple of edges on offense, but Tulane has the better defense across the board. The Green Wave run for better than 205 yards a game and that is the Ragin' Cajuns biggest weakness. Taking Tulane.
Betting odds: Fresno State -4, Arizona State +4, Total: 53.5
College Football Free Pick: As mentioned in our video in this contest, both teams should be excited to play and the fan bases making a lot of noise based on proximity. Fresno State has the No.2 scoring defense in the country and it's a program known for making life tough on the Pac-12.
College Football Free Pick: Though we like Eastern Michigan's defense, Georgia Southern has more team speed. Georgia Southern operates the option offense and the MAC Eagles lost 37-22 against the Army who runs the same offense. Take the SBC Eagles to cover.
Betting odds: Appalachian State -7, Middle Tennessee +7, Total:50.5
College Football Free Pick: App. State is another team that lost their head coach and they were not all that interested in winning the inaugural Sun Belt championship game, failing to cover at home. Middle Tennessee at +7 or better with a senior QB is a solid play.
