College Football Picks: Can Wisconsin Recover their Season with a Win over Ohio State?
by Brad Mullins Scores & Statson
The Badgers looked like a team on a mission and a team of destiny until last’s week comedy of errors that saw them lose to unranked Illinois. The first half was an unmitigated disaster and the second half was chock full of buffoonery and ill-fated coaching decisions. The Badgers have a better than average college football team and although we think it’s unlikely they waltz into “The Shoe” and pick up a victory, we do think they refocus and keep this one close.
The same old stuff happens about this time every year in college football. Clemson has a few near misses, and everyone jumps off the “Dabo train”. Look, Clemson is the reigning champions of football and they are going to be tough down the stretch. We are not predicting a repeat, at least not today! We are saying this team is good and the later the season goes, the better this team gets. They will prove the naysayers wrong, just as they always do.
Oregon beat Washington after the Huskies lead the entire game, Michigan suffers another loss but played fairly well against Penn State. Boise State took a dump at unranked BYU and Texas beat 2-5 Kansas by 2-points, in Texas. Last week showed us the character of a few teams and it definitely showed us a few teams that we wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole! Who gets the nod this week and who do we think mails it in?
SMU hits the ground running in Houston with a 7-0 record and a 16th spot in the Top 25. This team scores a lot of points (44.3 pg). The problem we have with laying -14 is the fact they allow 27 points per game. Houston is scoring 30.9 per game and allowing 30.7. We will meet this one in the middle with SMU picking up the victory – SMU 38, Houston 30.
No 13 Wisconsin vs. No. 3 Ohio State (OSU -14., O/U: 49.5) Best Line: Intertops
Wisconsin got the surprise of a lifetime last week in Illinois and they went home a loser. The Badgers know what a win would do for them against Ohio State. They need this win more than any other in the recent history of the program. Ohio State is extremely versatile on both defense and offense and they will be hard to beat at home. The numbers in this game mean a lot and they are close. These two are very similar in style and this one will be back and forth all game long. Wisconsin +14.
No 21 Appalachian State vs. South Alabama (APP -26.5, O/U: 52) Best Line: Bovada
AP State has found themselves once again and they are having a fantastic season as they come into this week with a 6-0 record. This team does everything right and they are playing a terrible South Alabama. We don’t like the total either way but absolutely love the -26.5.
Illinois vs. Purdue (PUR -9.5, O/U: 60.5) Best Line: America’s Bookie
We are scratching our head and trying to figure out what gives Purdue a -9.5-point advantage. They have one advantage on the field and that’s the receiving game. Beyond receiving, the numbers match up closely. In a BIG 10 rival game, we can’t lay -9.5 after Illinois is coming off a win over Wisconsin. Illinois +9.5.
No. 9 Auburn vs. No. 2 LSU (LSU -11, O/U: 58) Best Line: MyBookie
In our book, Clemson is still the No 2 team in the country, however, this takes nothing away from LSU. This team is a scoring machine and their offense is clicking. Auburn got back on track last week with a big win over Arkansas. LSU may cover and at home, it’s not a wild guess to think so, but we like the over better than -11. OVER 58.
No. 6 Penn State vs. Michigan State (PSU -6.5, O/U: 44) Best Line: Intertops
Michigan State had promise coming into this season and they still have a solid defense. Penn State has looked unbeatable at times and then other times not so much. We like Penn State in this one but love the under better. UNDER 44.
No. 15 Texas vs. TCU (TEX -2, O/U: 59.5) Best Line: Bovada
Texas is a bit of a mystery, but we think they are much better than TCU. Vegas likes the rival and we see that but not this time. Texas will easily cover -2. Texas 34, TCU 28.
Hawaii vs. New Mexico (HAW -10, O/U: 69) Best Line: America’s Bookie
Hawaii has a Good offensive scheme and against bad teams, they put up a pile of points. New Mexico is awful. Hawaii 48, New Mexico 31.
No. 8 Notre Dame vs. No. 19 Michigan (EVEN, O/U: 51) Best Line: MyBookie
Michigan is much improved over the last couple of weeks and Patterson has his confidence back. Notre Dame will play well as always but in the “Big House,” we like the Blue. Michigan 24, Notre Dame 23.
Washington State vs. No. 11 Oregon (ORE -14, O/U: 64.5) Best Line: Intertops
The Ducks went on the road to maybe their biggest rival in the PAC 12 and stole a victory in the last 3-minutes. If they can do this on the road in Washington, they will easily cover -14 at home against Washington State. Forget about that. Oregon is a better team and they have found their offense. They have also found a shred of defense. Oregon -14.
Having lived in several different states I am never quite
sure where I should say that I am from! I was born in WA. State. I did not grow
up there. My family moved to Idaho when I was a young boy, where we lived for
11 years. As a result of my fathers occupation; I have had the privilage to
experience many states and different cultures around the country.
I have lived in WA, OR, CA, ID, CO, KS, NY, MO, TX, FL, IN,
NV, AZ, and Hawaii. I have also lived in Puerto Rico, Mexico, El Salvador,
Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. I have managed to visit or live in, 49 of our great
states and travel extensively throughout Central America. My travels have taken
me to such places as Sinaloa, Chiapas, Myan ruins in Guatemala, and many, many
others. I believe that I have had the honor to visit every Mexican state.
I am an English teacher by trade and love helping others
improve thir lives through education. I have taught for institutions such as
The University of Washington (Go Huskies) Berlitz, and a few other
international language academies. I have obtained many degrees in the school of
hard knocks, by way of old fashioned experience! Such as driving taxi,
working at McDonalds, working for giant retailers as well as giant casinos! A
jack of all trades for sure.
I love sports! My passion is sports. I love talking about
it, arguing about it, following and keeping up with the current state of
affairs. Having lived in many places helps me connect with many different fan
bases. As a writer, this is a real advantage to have. I can connect with a
Yankees fan, or a Chargers fan. I love it and I hope to continue to give
readers a different perspective than the average, run of the mill story will
As you read my stories; I hope you enjoy them. I hope they
make you think, maybe make you happy and even make you mad! As you read further
you may discover that over the years; I have been influenced by people such as
Jim Rome, or Colin Cowherd. These are the kinds of folks that make me think and
make me see sports differently.
