The 2018 college football regular season continues to rapidly wind down in anticipation of this year’s College Football Playoff for the national title as well as an expanded bowl season lasting from mid-December right up until New Year’s Day.
With the release of this week’s CFP rankings, the ACC is suddenly well represented by the recent success of a few of the conference’s top teams. The Clemson Tigers have been at the top of the list all season long and they should be able to hold onto the No. 2 spot on the list as long as they win out in convincing fashion.
The Syracuse Orange have attracted some attention from the CFP committee at 7-2 straight-up with a jump to No. 13 ahead of No. 14 North Carolina State and No. 17 Boston College. All four of these teams reside in the ACC’s Atlantic Division with the surprising Pittsburgh Panthers leading the way in the Coastal Division at 4-1 in ACC play.
ACC Week 11 Betting Overview
Betting on the ACC against the spread has followed suit with the rankings over the past several weeks. Clemson is 5-4 ATS along with its 9-0 SU start after covering in its last four games in blowout wins.
Syracuse moved to 7-2 SU with a 6-3 record ATS after beating Wake Forest 41-24 last Saturday as a six-point road favorite. This followed a 51-41 victory at home against NC State as a slight two-point underdog.
The hottest betting team in the ACC all season long has been the BC Eagles at 7-2 both SU and ATS. They have covered in their last four games highlighted by a 27-14 victory against Miami (FL) as 3.5-point underdogs on Oct. 26. The Eagles are 4-1 ATS this season at home and they have covered in both of their games closing as underdogs.
ACC Week 11 Betting Trends
Week 11 gets underway early with Wake Forest going on the road as a heavy 17-point underdog against NC State on Thursday night in a 7:30 p.m. start on ESPN. The total for this game has been set at 69 points. The Wolfpack have covered ATS in their last five home games against the Demon Deacons in this in-state rivalry.
Florida State has just one SU win in its last four games and it has failed to cover as a heavy underdog in its last two losses to Clemson at home and NC State on the road. Things do not get any easier this Saturday as a 17.5-point road underdog against No. 3 Notre Dame in an 8 p.m. kickoff in South Bend on NBC. The total has been set at 54.5 points and it has gone OVER in five of the Seminoles’ last six road games.
ACC Pick of the Week
You should always ride a hot team and Clemson fits the bill with three winning tickets in the last three weeks for my ACC pick of the week. However, laying 20 points on the road against BC as another hot betting team this Saturday night has me going in a different direction for this week’s top play.
The Pitt Panthers were an afterthought in the ACC with three SU losses in their first five games, but back-to-back victories against Duke at home and Virginia on the road as underdogs have them 5-4 SU overall with a 6-3 record ATS. They should be added to the hot list with four-straight covers as underdogs.
Preseason rankings are based heavily on a team’s past performance, so the reality of Virginia Tech’s SU 4-4 record while going 3-5 ATS paints a picture of a Hokies’ team that was vastly overrated. They are leading the way as a top ACC team to go against after failing to cover in their last four games.
This week, Virginia Tech presents a big obstacle to Pitts’ unexpected run to the Coastal Division title and a probable matchup against Clemson in the ACC title game. The Panthers have been listed as three-point home favorites for Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. clash at Heinz Field on ESPNU with the total set at 51.5 points.
Pitt has won four of its last five home games against the Hokies SU with a perfect 5-0 record ATS. That sets the stage for another victory this Saturday both SU and ATS.
