Since the year 2000, quarterbacks have won the Heisman trophy 14 times. A talented group of quarterbacks in 2017 will look to keep that trend going. Don't believe me? Just check current Heisman odds and you will see the top lined primarily with quarterbacks.

Normally, there will be one or maybe even two high profile quarterbacks on everyone's list, but this year has several topping the Heisman list as well as NFL scouts draft boards.

No disrespect to Penn State's Saquon Barkley (+800) but you would have to have an aversion to money to take a shot at anyone not calling signals for their offense. Here are the current top 5 odds favorites to bring home the hardware come December in New York City.

Lamar Jackson, Louisville Cardinals (+300)

Jackson is the reigning Heisman trophy winner and looks the part again this season. If you are planning on taking Jackson for the win, then now is probably the time to do it. If he has a big game against Clemson his odds may be worse as he will be in the driver seat as the odds on favorite.

It won't come easy this weekend as Clemson presents one of two premier defenses Jackson will face the remainder of the season (FSU being the other one). His current odds at +300 put him near the top of the list after week 2 with only Mayfield having slightly lower odds at +225.

Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma Sooners (+225)

He planted his flag at the center of the Horseshoe and planted his name firmly among the favorites for the trophy. Mayfield's huge game against title contender Ohio State was a thing of beauty and has to be huge for the kid's confidence moving forward after last year's disaster versus the Buckeyes.

While playing in the Big 12 will generally give a quarterback plenty of spots to put up big numbers, Mayfield will also have plenty of opportunities to lead his team in big games as well.

In what appears to be a surprisingly strong conference early, Mayfield will have to face ranked teams in KSU and TCU along with long time rivals in the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Shootout and Oklahoma State Cowboys in a matchup of teams with playoff aspirations.

Did you see when Sully said: Everyone needs to quit yelling at Baker Mayfield.

Sam Darnold, USC Trojans (+600)

Highly ranked team…Check. Leading a high powered offense…Check. Plenty of exposure from a national powerhouse program…Check. Sam Darnold will have all the opportunity in the world to make his case for the Heisman as he leads the high powered Trojans offense as they make their run at the Pac 12. After getting over the Stanford hump already, Darnold will have plenty of chances to shine as his Trojans face a slew of suspect defenses in the immediate future. In my opinion, same holds true for Darnold as with Jackson in that if he is your guy you may want to jump on the numbers available now as it may not improve.

For those looking for a little longer odds and just want to shy away from the favorites, here are a few longer shots that may still have a realistic chance to get involved in the conversation.

Josh Rosen, UCLA Bruins (+1000)

The comeback versus Texas A&M will be talked about for years to come but he will need more. His team's defense appears to be shaky so he will need to keep the offense scoring points to stay competitive. He will get a few chances to shine versus the big boys with games at Washington and at USC later in the season, which could help the resume. Along with Darnold, he maybe the top rated on many NFL scouts boards as well.

Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Playing in the Big 12 should allow for the eye-popping stats, but for Rudolph to stay in the conversation he will have to lead the Cowboys to victory in big games.

TCU, Kansas State, and Oklahoma remain in OSU's bid to finish atop the Big 12. Rudolph will have to come up big for them to have a chance to win the conference. Strong season body of work along with winning Big 12 regular season will go a long way in Rudolph earning an invitation to New York.
