A Jackson State football signee was shot and killed in Dallas on Tuesday, just days after his high school graduation.
Leroy Hawkins III, 17, was sitting in the passenger seat in a 2007 Pontiac, which was parked in a lot. A suspect approached the car, argued with the occupants, and pulled out a gun, according to Dallas television station WFAA.
Hawkins was shot several times and pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police said the Hawkins, the driver and the suspect knew each other. No arrest had been made as of Wednesday morning.
Hawkins, an offensive lineman, was a graduate of DeSoto High School.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Leroy Hawkins," said Ashley Robinson, Jackson State's vice president and athletic director. "Leroy was a tremendous son, athlete, student and friend, and he will be sorely missed. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends."
