Report: Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez expected to retire

Longtime Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez is expected to retire, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on Saturday.

The 74-year-old Alvarez will likely make the announcement within the next few weeks, according to the newspaper.

Alvarez has been Wisconsin's athletic director since April 1, 2004. The Journal Sentinel reported that deputy athletic director Chris McIntosh is the likely replacement.

Alvarez was Wisconsin's football coach from 1990-2005 and turned a downtrodden program into one that won three Rose Bowls and recorded four 10-win seasons.

He also coached bowl games to conclude the 2012 and 2014 seasons after coaches Bret Bielema and Gary Anderson, respectfully, departed for other jobs.

He finished with a 119-74-4 record. Alvarez was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
