(STATS) - The Southland Conference clarified its championship determination on Thursday with UIW tied for first place and scheduled to play one fewer conference game than the other teams.
The number of conference-game losses will determine a team's placement in the standings. UIW's final placement, with two or three losses, will be considered identical to other teams that have the same number of losses, but one more win.
With two weekends of action remaining in the race for the conference title and the automatic bid to the FCS playoffs, UIW, McNeese and Nicholls are tied for first with 5-2 conference records. UIW travels to Central Arkansas for its final conference game on Saturday. McNeese, which lost to UIW, and Nicholls, which beat UIW, have two more conference games each.
Four other teams are one game back in the standings at 4-3.
In the Southland's scheduling format, 10 of its 11 teams play a nine-game schedule, while one team must play eight games. For the second consecutive year, it is UIW.
