Virginia Tech tight end James Mitchell is out for the season with a knee injury.
Mitchell was injured on a goal-line rushing attempt against Middle Tennessee last week. Head coach Justin Fuente said an MRI exam revealed damage to Mitchell's right knee that calls for season-ending surgery.
On a handoff at the 2-yard line, Mitchell was stopped for no gain and didn't return to the game. Fuente said Saturday he thought Mitchell would be fine. He has five career rushing touchdowns.
Mitchell considered leaving for the 2021 NFL Draft but opted to return after receiving a middle-round grade.
He had five catches for 42 yards with a touchdown this season and 52 career receptions for 838 yards and seven touchdowns for the Hokies. He also has run for five touchdowns.
