Late season football in the NFL, you never know what will happen, as favorites lose or fail to cover. Underdogs that are left to hang around by better teams find ways to beat the spread or even pull off upsets.

Other than the top teams and the bottom feeders, we had quite a bit of movement in the rest of our Power Ratings.

Favorites: 11-5 SU and 6-9-1 ATS (Season: 142-73-2 SU and 97-111-9 ATS)
Favorite of 7 or more: 4-2 SU and 2-3-1 ATS (Season: 48-14 SU and 30-30-2 ATS)
Favorites of 3 or less: 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS  (Season: 41-37-2 SU and 33-42-6 ATS)
Home Underdogs: 2-2 SU and 2-1-1 ATS (Season: 31-30-2 SU and 38-23-2 ATS)
Pick Games: Home team 4-3 ATS

This all leads to our score-based Power Ratings. These type of ratings are based not only on records but on how teams did against the point spread, which gives us a broader view when it comes to understanding the strengths of a team when making lines.

Here are this week's ranking and team updates. Your comments are always welcome.

1. New Orleans Saints

Odds: +275
Record: 12-2 SU and 10-4 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 1st

There is a lot of speculation after New Orleans scored just 50 points on their three-game road trip that they will just go back home and resume scoring 38 PPG. We are less certain that happens against Pittsburgh.

2. Kansas City Chiefs

Odds: +600
Record: 11-3 SU and 8-5-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 2nd

Kansas City's offense could not bail out the Chiefs again as the defense faltered in a loss to the L.A. Chargers. No margin for error for K.C. in a trip to Seattle with the Chargers poised to take over the top seed if Chiefs stumble.

3. Los Angeles Rams

Odds: +450
Record: 11-3 SU and 5-7-2 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 3rd

Has there been a Jared Goff sighting? The loss of Copper Kupp evidently affected the L.A. offense more than anticipated. However, Kupp's replacement Josh Reynolds has more than adequate, but where have Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods vanished to? Goff should have every chance for a monster game at Arizona.

4. Los Angeles Chargers

Odds: +750
Record: 11-3 SU and 9-5 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 5th

Maybe the most complete team in the NFL when looking at all the facets of football. The Chargers can put the pressure on Kansas City with a big win over Baltimore Saturday night.

5. Chicago Bears

Odds: +1100
Record: 10-4 SU and ATS
Last Week's Rank: 7th

Chicago was almost too aggressive for its own good, with too much trickery in the win over Green Bay. Oddsmakers not overpricing the Bears for their trip to Santa Clara.

6. Pittsburgh Steelers

Odds: +1600
Record: 8-5-1 SU and 7-6-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 10th

A real gut check win by Pittsburgh over New England as the defense came up big. The Steelers are not out of the woods to win the AFC North yet with a trip to the bayou next.

7. Baltimore Ravens

Odds: +2800
Record: 8-6 SU and ATS
Last Week's Rank: 8th

Here is something you have not seen on the NFL since maybe the 1940s. Baltimore has won four of five games by rushing for 230.6 YPG at better than 46 attempts per game. Let's see if it works in Carson, CA Saturday night against the Chargers.

8. Seattle Seahawks

Odds: +3300
Record: 8-6 and 9-4-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 4th

The sportsbooks and bettors smelled Seattle laboring at San Francisco a mile away, playing on a short week after Minnesota victory and with Kansas City on tap. The Seahawks need to win to keep 5-seed because a 6-seed means trip to Chicago versus playing Dallas.

9. Minnesota Vikings

Odds: +4000
Record: 7-6-1 SU and 6-6-2 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 11th

Did the change of offensive coordinators change the Minnesota offense or is Miami just that bad? We probably will never know, but if the Vikings blowout Detroit on the road, that will give the Vikings offense a lot of confidence.

10. Houston Texans

Odds: +1600
Record: 10-4 SU and 6-6-2 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 9th

In terms of effort based on body language, Houston has not played an intense-minded contest since whipping Tennessee 34-17 almost a month ago. If the Texans play that way at Philadelphia, they will lose again.

11. New England Patriots

Odds: +750
Record: 9-5 and 8-6 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 6th

As we have said all year, New England is not a Super Bowl team and they proved it in the loss to Pittsburgh. That doesn't mean the Patriots are not good, just not the level on both sides of the compared to previous years. Pats need to pound Buffalo to feel good about themselves.

12. Indianapolis Colts

Odds: +3300
Record: 8-6 SU and ATS
Last Week's Rank: 16th

Indianapolis had their most impressive win of the season in thorough domination on both sides of the ball against Dallas. A victory over the Giants and a Ravens loss bring the Colts to the cusp of the playoffs.

13. Tennessee Titans

Odds: +5000
Record: 8-6 SU and 9-5 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 15th

Tennessee is the AFC version of Washington, they just won't go away once they look dead. With Baltimore at the Chargers and a home game with Indianapolis next week, Tennessee can continue thinking playoffs by beating the Skins Saturday.

14. Dallas Cowboys

Odds: +2500
Record: 8-6 SU and 7-6-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 12th

Losing was a possibility at Indianapolis but a final score of 23-0 and their defense being pushed around for 178 yards on the ground was not supposed to happen. The Cowboys have another shot to win the East Division with the Buccaneers paying a visit.

15. Philadelphia Eagles

Odds: +4000
Record: 7-7 and 6-8 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 17th

Did you realize that if the Eagles had not lost in OT at Dallas last week they would be on a four-game winning streak? We know, woulda, coulda, shoulda, but credit Philadelphia for showing championship gumption with a shell of a secondary. Huge battle with the Texans this week.

16. Carolina Panthers

Odds: +20000
Record: 6-8 SU and 6-8  ATS
Last Week's Rank: 13th

Cam Newton cannot make simple throws with a bum shoulder. With the Panthers season over, find out exactly what is wrong with his shoulder and shut him down if surgery is required, why wait?

17. Green Bay Packers

Odds: +25000
Record: 5-8-1 SU and 5-9 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 14th

With McCarthy fired, Packers fans are looking for another scapegoat as the losses mount and Aaron Rodgers is the target. Rodgers is having the worst year of his storied career, but it's more than a being less accurate.

18. Detroit Lions

Odds: +40000
Record: 5-9 SU and 8-6 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 18th

Detroit has not certainly been getting their money's worth out of Matthew Stafford with the Lions averaging 15.8 PPG on eight games. This is not entirely his fault after the Golden Tate was subtracted his best receiver.  Playing Minnesota does not figure to boost scoring average.

19. Denver Broncos

Odds: +25000
Record: 6-8 SU and 6-7-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 19th

If there is such a thing as a snow mirage, Denver fits the bill. After winning three straight to get back to .500, the Broncos are back to playing poor football with a pair of losses to losing teams. There Christmas Eve contest at Oakland will further enhance holiday depression for viewers.

20. Cincinnati Bengals

Odds: +50000
Record: 6-8 SU and ATS
Last Week's Rank: 22nd

We are not in favor of Marvin Lewis keeping his job in the Queen City (or giving it to Hue Jackson either), but we like the moxie the depleted Bengals have shown the last two weeks. A win at Cleveland this Sunday would continue that feeling.

21. Atlanta Falcons

Odds: +50000
Record: 5-9 SU and 4-10 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 24th

Atlanta ended their long losing streak in decisive fashion over hapless Arizona. The Dirty Birds would like nothing better to end their long season on a three-game winning streak and they will try for No.2 in Charlotte.

22. Cleveland Browns

Odds: +20000
Record: 6-7-1 SU and 9-5 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 25th

Break up the Browns! With a victory over Cincinnati this week, Cleveland would be playing for a winning season at Baltimore next week. Unreal. Speaking of unreal, it has been 71 games since the Browns have been more than 3.5-point favorite like they are this week.

23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Odds: +100000
Record: 5-9 SU and 6-7-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 21st

After being -23 in turnover margin, the switch of defensive coordinators and moving away from Fitz Magic has spurred Tampa Bay to a +5 T.O. margin the last month. This, in turn, has led to 3-1 ATS record in that stretch and they will try for 4-1 ATS at Dallas.

24. New York Giants

Odds: +100000
Record: 5-9 SU and 8-6 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 20th

New York was blanked at home by Tennessee on a lousy weather day. They head to Indianapolis next with the Colts riding high, just remember the Giants are 6-1 ATS on the road this season.

25. Washington Redskins

Odds: +25000
Record: 7-7 SU and 8-6 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 27th

The Redskins are just like the group Weezer, they just won't go away after their clutch victory at Jacksonville to stay in the postseason hunt. At Tennessee on Saturday will be a much more daunting task.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars

Odds: +75000
Record: 4-10 SU and ATS
Last Week's Rank: 23rd

In a season full of embarrassment, losing at home to Washington with a 4th-string quarterback who was not even on any football team two weeks prior is hard to digest. The Jags will head south to South Beach to take on the Dolphins.

27. San Francisco 49ers

Odds: +300000
Record: 4-10 SU and 5-9 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 29th

Quarterback Nick Mullens is like a baseball pitcher who loves pitching at home and who struggles on the road. That thinking will be put to an even greater test with the Bears defense coming west.

28. Miami Dolphins

Odds: +25000
Record: 7-7 SU and 8-6 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 26th

Miami's point differential of -79 is a dozen points worse the New York Jets who are 4-10. The Dolphins will try their luck at home against Jacksonville, where they are 6-1 SU and ATS.

29. Buffalo Bills

Odds: +100000
Record: 5-9 SU and ATS
Last Week's Rank: 30th

Style points do not count for Buffalo, who beat Detroit last week but have not covered three straight. A trip to New England with the Patriots off back to back defeats doesn't look like nicely wrapped present under the Christmas tree.

30. New York Jets

Odds: +100000
Record: 4-10 SU and 5-8-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 28th

New York was up three late in the fourth quarter against Houston, but the Texans had another gear the Jets did not and Gang Green failed to win. Can the Flyboys knock off the struggling Packers?

31. Oakland Raiders

Odds: +500000
Record: 3-11 SU and 4-9-1 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 31st

Oakland stays ahead of Arizona by virtue of having beat them a few weeks ago. The Denver at Raiders game on Christmas Eve is the equivalent of getting coal in your stocking.

32. Arizona Cardinals

Odds: +300000
Record: 3-11 SU and 6-8 ATS
Last Week's Rank: 32nd

The good news, Arizona scored the first and last touchdowns at Atlanta. The bad news, the Cardinals surrendered 40 points in the middle. Perfect timing, the last home game is against a Rams team wanting to put the hurt on somebody after consecutive setbacks.
