Happy 2018 everybody! I hope you enjoyed a fantastic holiday season and you are getting prepared for a great new year.
It should be an exciting one in sports. There will be a lot going on and the talent level across all sports might be the best it’s ever been in terms of pure athleticism. But we will talk about that some other time.
Right now, I think it’s important for me to tell you about the newest sports crisis, in my opinion. Let me be clear, this is an issue that has been around for a while. But I think we finally hit the tip of the iceberg this past weekend.
I’m talking about the state of officiating throughout sports right now.
It’s bad. It’s perhaps the worst it has ever been. But to make matters worse, we have officially entered crisis mode based on all of the public outcries and complaining that we’ve witnessed across multiple sports.
Now you may be asking… OK, well this has been a problem for a while. Why are you just now saying we entered crisis mode this weekend? The answer is because I think this weekend was an all-time high. This weekend proved that this has become a serious problem, and is without question a serious concern by athletes, coaches, and fans alike. Here is what we saw this weekend:
1. Longtime college basketball referee Ted Valentine said he may retire because of how everyone is mad at him. 2. Longtime NFL referee Jeff Triplette officiated Saturday’s Chiefs vs Titans game and then reportedly retired because he is tired of being criticized. 3. Draymond Green absolutely blasted NBA officials and said officiating is the worst it’s ever been.
''I want a running play,'' McCoy said. ''It was a play I was lobbying for the whole time and it didn't work out ...''
People, this is a problem. And here’s the thing – It is beside the point of whether or not you truly agree we have an officiating problem – Rather, it is an issue that clearly has a huge public outcry. It is a subject that is very touchy to a lot of people, and quite frankly, it is an issue that is not going away.
People are only going to continue to complain about officiating. Heck, they always have, and rightfully so at times. But I think we have reached a point in time where we are constantly hearing athletes complain publicly about officials. This has become normal and literally happens all the time. So naturally what follows is fans taking the lead from athletes and doing more complaining themselves. It is one big circle that is continuing to go around and around.
I don’t think this issue is going away. I do think the officiating is pretty bad, but I don’t think it is the worse it’s ever been or somehow far worse than what I’ve been used to in my life. And believe me, I’m not sitting here defending the officials. I think they get stuff wrong a lot. But I’m simply saying that I haven’t noticed some huge difference in the state of officiating as a lot of other people have.
Nonetheless, whether you think people are just being whiny, or if they have a point. The fact of the matter is that a lot of people are upset, and this will all continue to boil over. Whether you agree with it or not, we definitely have an officiating crisis in sports right now.
