It's Crazy How Good Patriots Are Against The Spread
by Mike Sullivan Scores & Statson
If there is one thing I hate about sports betting, it’s ridiculous spreads. I mean there is nothing worse than a point spread that looks insane and numbers you just can’t seem to rationalize whatsoever.
In fact, I am always concerned when I see double-digit point spreads in the NFL. They are rare and we don’t usually see teams favored by double digits. I mean, sure, we see these types of spreads every so often, but not a lot in the grand scheme of things. Nor should we. The NFL is a league that is supposed to be balanced. We should not see a ton of blowouts because ideally, all the teams should be somewhat close to each other in terms of talent.
However, it’s truly remarkable how often the New England Patriots are double-digit favorites compared to the rest of the NFL. I mean it seems like every other week I look at the games and the Pats are favored by double-digit points. It’s pretty crazy to think about, and it speaks to how dominant the New England Patriots organization has been over the years.
To put this into perspective, tonight’s Patriots vs Dolphins game marks the fourth time this season the Pats will be a favorite of 11+ points. The Detroit Lions have been an 11 point favorite just three times since 1993. Wild.
What’s even crazier is how good the Pats are against the spread. Take tonight’s game for instance. The Patriots are playing the Dolphins with a chance to lock up the division. The Patriots are 11-12 point favorites depending on which sportsbook you look at. Regardless of the exact number, what is certain is that they will close as double-digit favorites yet again.
Let’s take a look at the crazy numbers. The Patriots are a remarkable 13-3 against the spread in their last 16 road games, they are 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 December games, they are 9-0 against the spread in their last 9 games on grass. They are also 10-1 against the spread vs a team with a losing record.
