The New York Jets signed placekicker Sam Ficken and waived Kaare Vedvik on Tuesday, two days after Vedvik missed a 45-yard field goal and an extra point in a 17-16 season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Jets reportedly held a five-kicker tryout, with Ficken beating out Greg Joseph, Elliott Fry, Younghoe Koo and Tristan Vizcaino.
Ficken, 26, has just six regular-season field-goal attempts in his career -- making three of them -- as an injury fill-in for the Los Angeles Rams over the last two seasons. He has hit from 21, 23 and 34 yards, missed from 28, 36 and 46 yards and is 14 of 15 on extra points.
The Jets claimed Vedvik, 25, off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings after final cuts. The Vikings had acquired him from Baltimore for a fifth-round pick just weeks earlier, but he missed three of four field goal attempts in two preseason games with Minnesota.
Playing in his first regular-season game on Sunday, Vedvik hit the left upright on a PAT and missed wide right from 45 yards late in the first half. The Jets led 16-3 entering the fourth quarter before the Bills rallied with two late touchdowns.
The Jets let Pro Bowl kicker Jason Myers leave for Seattle in free agency. They signed Chandler Catanzaro to replace him, but Catanzaro struggled during training camp and the preseason before retiring.
