Justin Rose, No. 4 in the world golf rankings, withdrew from Wednesday's pro-am at the BMW PGA Championship, citing a knee injury.

"Last Thursday I slipped and jarred my knee," Rose said in a statement. "I am doing everything I can to be fit to play on Thursday."

The BMW PGA Championship, held at the Wentworth Club southwest of London, is considered the European Tour's flagship event. Rose is scheduled to tee off Thursday with Jon Rahm and Patrick Reed.

Rose last played in the Tour Championship from Aug. 27-30.

The 39-year-old Englishman is set to compete for Europe in the Ryder Cup, to be held Sept. 25-27 at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Wisconsin.
