Boston and Tampa Bay both went undefeated this week. As well, both teams are on league-leading active win streaks of five games and it looks like both teams are secure at the top of the Atlantic.

Injuries are starting to pile up around the league right before the trade deadline. I expect the trade deadline to be busy this year and some teams are already starting to get in on the action.

Here are the latest NHL betting trends:

(Trends for Games Played Through February 7th 2020)

Favorites (Feb 1st-7th): 30-15-1-3 SU / 18-33 ATS (Season: 467-258-63-42 SU / 299-543 ATS)

Underdogs (Feb 1st-7th): 20-19-9-2 SU / 33-18 ATS (Season: 363-376-61-30 SU / 543-299 ATS)

Game Totals (Feb 1st-7th): 21 Overs / 26 Unders (Season: 405 Overs / 400 Unders)

The best teams often start piling up wins at this point and that was true this week.

#1 Washington Capitals

Stanley Cup Odds: +800

Record: 36-13-5 (+862) / 29-25 ATS

Previous Rank: 1

The Capitals went 1-1 this week and remain atop of our rankings for another week. Ovi is only two goals away from hitting the 700 goals milestone, which he should achieve this week.

#2 New York Islanders

Stanley Cup Odds: +1600

Record: 31-15-6 (+$688) / 24-28 ATS

Previous Rank: 2

The Islanders had a solid week (2-0-1) and they got it done by scoring goals. The Isle defeated the Stars (4-3) and Kings (5-3). If they continue improving on OFF (2.92 GPG - 19th) watch out.

#3 Pittsburgh Penguins

Stanley Cup Odds: +1000

Record: 33-15-5 (+649) / 25-28 ATS

Previous Rank: 4

The Penguins went 1-1 with a win over WAS (4-3) and a loss to TB (4-2). One area I’d like to see PIT improve upon is their powerplay, which ranks #17 (19.2 PP%) this season.

#4 Columbus Blue Jackets

Stanley Cup Odds: +2000

Record: 30-16-9 (+$641) / 31-24 ATS

Previous Rank: 7

CBJ were busy this week and they ended up going 3-0-1. Columbus are one of the hottest teams in the NHL and they’re getting it done with a mediocre line-up void of any superstars.

#5 New York Rangers

Stanley Cup Odds: +6000

Record: 26-23-4 (+$577) / 33-20 ATS

Previous Rank: 5

The Rangers went 2-2 this week. Despite being 7th in the Metropolitan, the Rangers have posted a big profit this season, as they’re often big underdogs. I expect NYR to struggle down the stretch.

#6 Edmonton Oilers

Stanley Cup Odds: +2000

Record: 28-20-6 (+$485) / 29-25 ATS

Previous Rank: 6

The Oilers struggled this week (1-2) and posted a loss. Goaltending remains a problem (3.13 GA/G - 21st) and unless they tighten up on defense it’s going to be a tough path getting into the playoffs.

#7 Vancouver Canucks

Stanley Cup Odds: +1800

Record: 30-20-5 (+$440) / 31-24 ATS

Previous Rank: 3

The Canucks went 1-2-1 this week with three consecutive losses. It’s not the end of the world for VAN fans, as they’re still 1st in the Pacific, but they need to end the losing streak quickly.

#8 Colorado Avalanche

Stanley Cup Odds: +900

Record: 30-16-6 (+$380) / 31-21 ATS

Previous Rank: 9

The Avs are the highest scoring team in the league (3.69 GPG) and the defense continues to improve (2.88 GA/G - 10th). It’d be nice to add a piece or two prior to the deadline, though.

#9 Winnipeg Jets

Stanley Cup Odds: +3300

Record: 27-23-5 (+357) / 32-23 ATS

Previous Rank: 13

The Jets went 2-0-1 and made a nice profit this week. They came into the week on a 5-game losing streak, but the quick turnaround has kept them in the playoff race in the Metropolitan.

#10 St. Louis Blues

Stanley Cup Odds: +900

Record: 32-15-8 (+$278) / 26-29 ATS

Previous Rank: 8

The Blues went 1-2 this week and they now only have 2 wins in their last 8 games. The Blues still have a 6-point lead in the Metropolitan over the Avs, but the recent skid isn’t a promising sign.

#11 Dallas Stars

Stanley Cup Odds: +1400

Record: 30-19-5 (+$200) / 29-25 ATS

Previous Rank: 10

The Stars are 3rd in the Central thanks to great goaltending (2.54 GA/G - 3rd). They would be wise to add some offensive firepower prior to the deadline, as the Stars rank #26 in scoring (2.63 GPG).

#12 Philadelphia Flyers

Stanley Cup Odds: +2200

Record: 29-18-7 (+$192) / 31-23 ATS

Previous Rank: 14

The Flyers are far from out of the playoff race in the Metropolitan. If they want to make the playoffs they need to improve on offense (3.06 GPG - 16th) and on the powerplay (19.1 PP% - 18th).

#13 Florida Panthers

Stanley Cup Odds: +2000

Record: 29-18-6 (+$94) / 27-26 ATS

Previous Rank: 11

Florida remain one of the highest scoring teams (3.53 GPG - 5th), but they allow 3.3 GA/G (28th). The Panthers struggled this week (1-2-1) and they’re 1-point away from the Leafs for 3rd in the Atlantic.

#14 Chicago Blackhawks

Stanley Cup Odds: +3300

Record: 25-21-8 (+$93) / 32-22 ATS

Previous Rank: 12

Chicago are last in the Central, but it’s the closest division in the NHL this season and they’re not out of the playoff picture. They definitely need to improve on the powerplay (15.2 PP% - 28th).

#15 Tampa Bay Lightning

Stanley Cup Odds: +800

Record: 34-15-5 (+$47) / 24-30 ATS

Previous Rank: 15

TB have had a huge turnaround from a betting standpoint. It wasn’t long ago that they were down a bunch and now they’re in the black after going on a 5-game winning streak.

#16 Boston Bruins

Stanley Cup Odds: +800

Record: 33-10-12 (-$90) / 26-29 ATS

Previous Rank: 18

Boston went 3-0 this week and are on a 5-game win streak. The Bruins are scoring 3.33 GPG (6th) and allowing 2.38 GA/G (1st). This team is going to be extremely tough to beat down the stretch.

#17 Carolina Hurricanes

Stanley Cup Odds: +1800

Record: 31-20-3 (-$97) / 23-31 ATS

Previous Rank: 16

Carolina are getting great goaltending (2.74 GA/G - 6th) this season and the offense isn’t playing poorly either (3.15 GPG - 13th). They also have a top 10 powerplay (21.3 PP% - 9th).

#18 Minnesota Wild

Stanley Cup Odds: +5000

Record: 26-22-6 (-$207) / 27-27 ATS

Previous Rank: 20

The Wild went 3-1 this week and they’re on a 3-game winning streak now. The race for 3rd  in the Central is going to be insane. MIN have a chance, but need to tighten up on DEF (3.26 GA/G - 25th).

#19 Buffalo Sabres

Stanley Cup Odds: +8000

Record: 24-23-8 (-$442) / 31-24 ATS

Previous Rank: 21

The Sabres went 2-1-1 and posted a small profit this week. Buffalo’s owners came out this week and said they were disappointed with the team’s play. Maybe that’s the spark this team needs.

#20 Arizona Coyotes

Stanley Cup Odds: +2500

Record: 27-22-7 (-$500) / 31-25 ATS

Previous Rank: 19

Arizona went 1-1-1 this week with the win coming against the Oilers (3-0). Arizona are on a 2-9 skid right now, but they’re only 1-point out of 3rd place in the Pacific.

#21 Montreal Canadiens

Stanley Cup Odds: +6600

Record: 26-23-7 (-$524) / 26-30 ATS

Previous Rank: 23

Montreal went 3-1 this week and posted a nice profit. The Canadiens are on a hot streak, but they got some bad news this week, as Weber was placed on the IR with a lower-body injury.

#22 Calgary Flames

Stanley Cup Odds: +2500

Record: 27-22-6 (-$547) / 20-35 ATS

Previous Rank: 17

The Flames struggled mightily this week (0-3), but so did most of the Pacific division. With as much talent as this team has upfront, they should be averaging more than 2.6 GPG (27th).

#23 Nashville Predators

Stanley Cup Odds: +2500

Record: 26-20-7 (-$587) / 18-35 ATS

Previous Rank: 24

The Preds went 2-1 with wins over the Jets (2-1) and Flames (3-2). The defense is starting to play a bit better, but the Preds are still allowing 3.23 GA/G (24th). They rank #9 in scoring (3.25 GPG), though.

#24 Toronto Maple Leafs

Stanley Cup Odds: +1600

Record: 29-19-7 (-$777) / 24-31 ATS)

Previous Rank: 22

The Leafs went 2-2 this week, but posted a loss. Andersen went down with an injury this week and that forced the Leafs to trade for Campbell and Clifford from the Kings, as they needed a goalie.

#25 San Jose Sharks

Stanley Cup Odds: +7500

Record: 24-27-4 (-$779) / 26-29 ATS

Previous Rank: 30

It was encouraging to see the Sharks go 2-1 this week despite all of the injuries on offense. They’ve scored 9 goals during their 2-game win streak, but it might be too little, too late.

#26 New Jersey Devils

Stanley Cup Odds: +50000

Record: 19-24-10 (-$797) / 25-28 ATS

Previous Rank: 25

The Devils went 1-0-2, but they managed to only lose $10 this week. That’s the benefit of betting on ML underdogs in the NHL. The Devils have the 2nd worst goal differential (-44) this season.

#27 Vegas Golden Knights

Stanley Cup Odds: +1600

Record: 28-21-7 (-$812) / 23-33 ATS

Previous Rank: 28

VGK went 2-1 with wins over the Preds (3-0) and Panthers (7-2). VGK are hanging on in the Pacific, but adding a piece at the trade deadline would go a long way in helping this team make a run.

#28 Anaheim Ducks

Stanley Cup Odds: +25000

Record: 22-26-7 (-$872) / 29-26 ATS

Previous Rank: 27

The Ducks went 2-0-2 this week. It could have been a much better week if they were able to defeat the Leafs or Canadiens in OT. The Ducks are definitely a team to fade down the stretch.

#29 Ottawa Senators

Stanley Cup Odds: +30000

Record: 18-25-11 (-$1163) / 28-26 ATS

Previous Rank: 26

Ottawa went 0-1-2 this week and they’re now on a 4-game losing streak. The Sens season is over and they should try trading any vets to pick up some younger assets prior to the trade deadline.

#30 Los Angeles Kings

Stanley Cup Odds: +25000

Record: 19-31-5 (-$1214) / 29-26 ATS

Previous Rank: 29

The Kings went 0-3 this week and continue to lose money rapidly for anyone backing them. I expect LAK to make some moves before the deadline and they already completed one trade this week.

#31 Detroit Red Wings

Stanley Cup Odds: +150000

Record: 13-39-4 (-$2225) / 22-34 ATS

Previous Rank: 31

The Red Wings aren’t mathematically out yet, but they’re as good as dead this season. DET should be sellers at the deadline and do everything they can to get some fresh blood on the roster.
