Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara has been fined $5,000 for cross-checking Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher during the teams' last game, the NHL announced Thursday.

The fine is the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement.

The incident occurred at 5:38 of the second period of the Bruins' 4-1 victory over Montreal on Wednesday. Both players received offsetting minor penalties, with Chara whistled for cross-checking while Gallagher received a roughing penalty.

Chara, 42, has recorded 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 56 games this season for Boston. The former Norris Trophy recipient has collected 655 points (205 goals, 450 assists) in 1,541 career games with the New York Islanders (1997-2001), Ottawa Senators (2001-2006) and Bruins.
