New York Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko sat out Saturday's game against the host Washington Capitals and will be placed on the NHL COVID-19 protocol list, multiple media outlets reported.

Julien Gauthier was inserted into the lineup to replace Kakko, who has recorded three points (two goals, one assists) in 14 games this season for the Rangers.

Kakko, 20, has 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 80 career games since being selected by the Rangers with the second overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft.

Gauthier, 23, entered Saturday's contest with one goal in nine games this season.
