Fourth-seeded Marin Cilic won his second-round match with England's Kyle Edmund 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Tuesday at the Shanghai Masters at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, China.
The Croatian saved three break points against Edmund in the one-hour, 38-minute match.
Cilic will face Chinese wild card Di Wu or American Steve Johnson in the next round. Should he win the Shanghai Open, Cilic would secure a spot in the 2017 ATP Finals.
Cilic recently lost to France's Adrian Mannarino last Saturday with a spot in the Japan Open Championships on the line.
Johnson advanced after 13th-seeded Nick Kyrgios of Australia retired after dropping the first set of their match 7-6 (5).
2013 Shanghai Masters runner-up and 16th-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina brushed aside Russian Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4 in their second-round match.
It was del Potro's first head-to-head matchup with the 19-year-old Rublev. Del Potro, a U.S. Open semifinalist, never faced a break point and fired 14 aces. He will face either third-seed Alexander Zverev of Germany or England's Aljaz Bedene in the third round.
Bedene won his first-round affair with Italy's Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-4.
U.S. Open semifinalist and seventh-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta was upset by fellow countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-5, 7-5 in their round two match.
In other second-round action, 15th-seeded Lucas Pouille of France was ousted by Italy's Fabio Fognini 7-6 (7), 6-3 and France's Richard Gasquet bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Korea's Hyeon Chung in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Tenth-seeded American Sam Querrey bested Japan's Yuichi 6-3, 6-2 in a first-round match. South African 11th seed Kevin Anderson, a U.S. Open finalist, beat Mannarino 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round.
Other first-round results included 12th-seeded American John Isner winning a three-set contest with Serbia & Montenegro's Dusan Lajovic 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) and Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov advancing after a 4-6, 6-1, 2-1 result after 14th-seeded American Jack Sock retired in the third set.
German Jan-Lennard Struff beat countryman Mischa Zverev 3-6, 6-5 after Zverev retired. Serbia & Montenegro's Viktor Troicki defeated Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-7, 6-3, 6-0.
Argentinian Diego Schwartzman ousted Australian Jordan Thompson 6-4, 7-6 (4) and American Ryan Harrison bested China's Ze Zhang 6-2, 6-3.
