D.C. United midfielder Julian Gressel signed a four-year contract with the club, according to multiple reports.

The Athletic reported that the deal will average approximately $700,000 over the first three years. The team holds an option for 2023.

Gressel, a 26-year-old German, spent his first three MLS seasons with Atlanta United but reached a contract impasse last month. That led to the trade to D.C. United on Jan. 21.

"It's been a long time," Gressel told the Washington Post. "It was a difficult season mentally at times -- very difficult for me last year. Being traded relieved some of that because I knew something was going to happen with the contract here.

"It's been different (this week) not having to think about it and not having to call my agent every day."

Gressel's base salary was just over $114,000 last season, according to the MLS Players Association salary database.

Gressel recorded 15 goals and 35 assists in 98 regular-season matches (88 starts) in three seasons with Atlanta United.

He was MLS Rookie of the Year in 2017 when he had five goals and nine assists, and he followed up with four goals and a career-high 14 assists in 2018. Last season, Gressel had a career-best six goals to go with 12 assists.

Gressel has two goals and two assists in nine career playoff appearances.
