Austin FC signed free agent defender Matt Besler, the 2021 expansion club announced Wednesday.
Besler's contract with Sporting Kansas City expired after the 2020 season, his 12th year with the organization.
The 33-year-old appeared in 10 games (nine starts) in 2020 and registered three goals and 18 assists in 294 games (285 starts) since 2009. He helped the club win three U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup.
"We are pleased to add a proven defender to the squad that fits the profile we are looking for in a player," Austin sporting director Claudio Reyna said in a news release. "Matt's unique blend of leadership and competitive experience is a valuable combination of strengths, and we are excited to have him continue his career in Austin."
Besler competed with the U.S. men's national team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and has earned 47 caps on the international stage.
"I'm ecstatic about this opportunity," Besler said in a release. "After playing in MLS for so many years, I can't help but feel excited to join an ambitious project with Austin FC. I've seen amazing things from Austin's fanbase already, and I truly look forward to playing in front of them."
Besler gives Austin another option at center-back along with Julio Cascante and Jhohan Romana.
