The Vancouver Whitecaps named Marc Dos Santos as head coach on Wednesday.

Dos Santos, a Montreal native, worked last season as an assistant coach for the expansion Los Angeles FC, who were knocked out of the MLS playoffs by Real Salt Lake on Thursday.

Dos Santos, 41, agreed to a three-year deal, running through the 2021 season. It's his first head coaching job in MLS.

He's also coached in the North American Soccer League, along with Portugal, Canada and Brazil.

The Whitecaps fired head coach Carl Robinson, assistant coach Martyn Pert and goalkeeper coach Stewart Kerr with five games remaining in the season.

Robinson was in his fifth season as Vancouver coach. He had an MLS record of 64-59-42 with the club and guided the Whitecaps to the Western Conference semifinals in 2015.

Whitecaps FC Academy technical director Craig Dalrymple took over as acting coach and went 2-2-1 over the final stretch.
