The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired Peruvian defender Marcos Lopez via transfer, his team Sporting Cristal announced Friday.

Lopez, 19, has played for the dominant Sporting Cristal team since 2017, where he scored five goals in 23 matches last season.

Lopez debuted professionally in 2016 with San Martin de Porres before seeing field time at the South American U-20 Championship in 2017 for Peru. The next year, he scored his first senior team promotion.

Defense was a major issue for San Jose in 2018, when it finished last in the Western Conference (4-21-9, 21 points) with the worst record in MLS. The Earthquakes allowed 71 goals last season, which was tied for the second-most in the league with Minnesota United.
