FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls both experienced disappointing results in their most recent games.
Both teams will attempt to rebound Saturday afternoon when FC Dallas hosts New York.
FC Dallas is off to a respectable 5-3-2 start and went 2-0-1 in its previous three games before absorbing a 2-1 loss at Houston last Saturday.
FC Dallas fell behind in the 21st minute on after a penalty to Carlos Gruezo. It also saw a potential game-tying goal in stoppage time waved off due to offsides.
Dominique Badji scored for FC Dallas, which has one goal in its last two contests and has been held to two goals or less in all but one game.
FC Dallas is 3-0-2 at home this season but will be shorthanded Saturday when Michael Barrios sits due to a one-game ban for accruing yellow cards and Paxton Pomykal sits due to a hamstring injury. Barrios' MLS streak of 96 straight matches will end while Pomykal will sit for the second straight contest.
"They're a team that has worked in a way, in a system for 3-4 years," FC Dallas coach Luchi Gonzalez said of New York. "It's a pressing system, with a lot of duels, a lot of winning second, third balls; constricting space, suffocating space."
New York won consecutive contests for the first time by getting home wins over FC Cincinnati and the Los Angeles Galaxy but took a 2-1 loss to Montreal on Wednesday.
Aaron Long scored in the 36th minute but New York lost the lead and allowed the game-winning goal in the 79th minute after committing a penalty.
"This is a game that, especially at this point in the season, we want to get three points," New York midfielder Sean Davis said. "For us to come away with nothing is really frustrating."
New York played without Bradley Wright-Phillips for a third consecutive game due to a groin injury. Wright-Phillips has one goal in six games so far after getting 20 last season and could sit again Saturday.
Tom Barlow, who scored eight goals in eight games with Red Bulls II in the USL, made his debut Wednesday in the starting lineup and could start again.
New York is 4-0-2 in the last six meetings with FC Dallas and 8-1-4 in the last 13.
