The New England Revolution announced Friday that they have exercised the permanent transfer options of forward Cristian Penilla and midfielder Luis Caicedo.

This season, Penilla was the Revolution's leading goal scorer with 12 and also had seven assists in 33 games. Caicedo had one goal and four assists in 30 appearances (29 starts).

Penilla, who is from Ecuador, was on loan from Pachuca (Mexico) of Liga MX. Caicedo, 22, was on loan from Primera B club Cortulua in his native Colombia.

"This year both Penilla and Caicedo were impactful players on the field for us and we felt it was important to exercise both players' permanent transfer options at the start of the offseason," New England general manager Michael Burns said in a statement. "We look forward to seeing both players continue to grow and contribute to the team's success moving forward."

Penilla was named the Revolution's MVP in fan balloting.
