The New England Revolution signed defender Alexander Buttner, a veteran of 12 seasons in a number of top leagues, including a run with Manchester United in the team's 2012-13 Premier League-winning season.
Buttner, a 30-year-old from the Netherlands, has also played in Holland, Russia and Belgium. He has 275 appearances in those leagues with 20 goals and 37 assists, playing for Vitesse, Dynamo Moscow and Anderlecht, along with Manchester United.
The Revolution, who completed the deal with targeted allocation money, are expected to use Buttner at left back, which has not been locked down since Chris Tierney retired after the 2018 season.
After hiring Bruce Arena as head coach during the just-completed season, the Revolution rebounded from a slow start and made the MLS Cup playoffs for the first time since 2015. They lost in the first round to Atlanta United.
