Six-time FIFA Player of the Year Marta is expected to miss Brazil's Women's World Cup opener Sunday against Jamaica due to an injured left thigh.
"She has been recovering better than expected, but she cannot start," manager Vadao said Saturday. "Maybe she will be on the bench, but our plan is that she doesn't take part in the game."
The 33-year-old Brazilian captain suffered the injury last week in practice.
The midfielder could return for Brazil's second match against Australia on Thursday, Vadao said.
This is the fifth World Cup for Marta, who is the tournament's all-time leader with 15 goals.
