The American Express is in the books as Hudson Swafford grabbed his 3rd win on the PGA Tour since turning pro out of Georgia in 2011. Even with the win, he’s not getting much respect from the oddsmakers as he comes in at +12500. The reason may be the strong field this week that’s set to tee off for the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
That field includes Jon Rahm as the favorite at +700 and Justin Thomas who comes in at +1200. And the names continue from there with last year’s winner, Patrick Reed, sporting a +3000 which shows how strong this field is. Reed ran away with this tournament last season finishing with a 5-stroke lead over a group of five players who all finished T2.
As for Rahm, he finished last week -1 over at T14 with 8 other players. Still, he’s the favorite and a former winner as he won the Farmers in 2017. And repeating here is tough – unless you’re Tiger Woods. He’s not playing yet – but Woods won this event seven times. Phil Mickelson has won it 3 times. Only 9 players have won the Farmers more than once dating back to 1952.

2022 Farmers Insurance Open Preview
Where: San Diego, California
Course: Torrey Pines Golf Course / both North & South
Format: Stroke Play on two courses
Par: 72 (both courses)
Length: 7,258 North / 7,698 South
When: January 26 –39, 2022
Purse: $8.5 Million
It’s a four-day event so the Farmers Insurance Open uses both the South and North Courses at Torrey Pines. Saturday and Sunday play are on only the South course following the cut so get ready for some massive tee shots! The South is known for being the longest set of links on the PGA Tour and both courses are tailor-made for powerful drives off the tee.
But, Torrey Pines also requires some skill with short irons and hot putters go a long way on the dual-course that features Bentgrass on the North Course while the greens are poa-annua grass on the South Course. The greens seem to feed off the ocean breeze and moisture and they can change quickly if weather conditions change.
Torrey Pines is known for its scenic look as the design makes full use of terrain and small hills along the coastal cliffs. The roughs are usually cut to a medium height for this event. There are plenty of well-placed bunkers so get ready for many players taking a walk through the sand.

I’m fading slightly on Rahm this week following last week’s effort which puts Xander Schauffele at the top of my list. Schauffele turned in a T7 last year at Torrey Pines during the U.S. Open and was one of the 5 players chasing Reed during his run last year at this event. He has his win with the Team USA victory at the Ryder Cup and he finished 12th, and T12 in his last two outings.
Will Zalatoris +2800
Will Zalatoris will be featured a bunch this week when he’s teeing off. His swing is perfect for the Farmers and you can expect some long drives from the young player. He also does well with his short game here as he finished T7 last season. And, he finished a strong T6 last week at the American Express.
Patrick Reed +4000
Patrick Reed chewed this event up last season and there’s no reason why he can’t repeat that. The only knock on Reed is that he’s never successfully defended one of his wins the next time around. Reed has a great combination game going and the dual-course set up on both courses favor his style of play. He’s finished in the top-25 here during his last five visits.
Others: Here’s a note that will make you feel good if you are going with Jon Rahm (+700) this week. This is the course where he won his first PGA Tour event and his first Major. If you’re looking for a true-value pick, keep an eye on Luke List (+8000) as his short game and putter could put him in a great place heading into the weekend.
