2023 Farmers Insurance Open Odds and Picks

The American Express is in the books as Jon Rahm continues his run of impressive golf. This week the PGA TOUR heads to Torrey Pines for the 2023 version of the Farmers Insurance Open. As can be expected, Rahm enters the event as the leader – this time by a wide margin. He’s at +400 while others start the week at +1200.

The field also includes Tony Finau who comes in behind Rahm at +1200 and Justin Thomas who comes in at +1400. The big names continue from there with last year’s winner, Luke List, sporting a +8000 which makes him a nice option when looking for value.

PGA Sportsbooks

List won this event last year over Will Zalatoris during a playoff. Now Zalatoris returns as part of a group of three favorites bunched together at +1400. As for playoffs – this event has only ended in a playoff three times in the last ten editions.

Here are the favorites to win the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open outright:

Jon Rahm +400

Tony Finau +1200

Xander Schauffele +1200

Collin Morikawa +1400

Justin Thomas +1400

Will Zalatoris +1400

2023 Farmers Insurance Open Preview

Where: San Diego, California

Course: Torrey Pines Golf Course / both North & South

Format: Stroke Play on two courses

Par: 72 (both courses)

Length: 7,258 North / 7,698 South

When: January 25–28 2023

Purse: $8.7 Million

It’s a four-day event, so the Farmers Insurance Open uses both the South and North Courses at Torrey Pines. Saturday and Sunday play are on only the South course following the cut so get ready for some massive tee shots! The South is known for being the longest set of links on the PGA Tour and both courses are tailor-made for powerful drives off the tee.

Torrey Pines also requires some skill with short irons and hot putters will be a plus on the dual-course setup. Why is that? Because there are Bentgrass greens on the North Course while the greens are poa-annua grass on the South Course. The greens seem to feed off the ocean breeze and moisture and they can change quickly if weather conditions change.

Torrey Pines is known for its scenic look as the design makes full use of terrain and small hills along the coastal cliffs. The roughs are usually cut to a medium height for this event. There are plenty of well-placed bunkers so get ready for many players taking a walk through the sand.

2023 Farmers Insurance Open Predictions

Jon Rahm +400

You would have to have been on another planet if you don’t understand why Jon Rahm is the lone favorite at +400 this week. Rahm won here in 2017 and has been in the mix for a second win at Torrey Pines several times over the years. More importantly, he’s won four times in his last six starts worldwide. He’s played three events on the PGA TOUR this year with two wins and a T4.

Xander Schauffele +1200

Xander Schauffele turned in a T7 two seasons ago at Torrey Pines during the U.S. Open and was one of the 5 players chasing former PGA TUR player Patrick Reed during his win here at Torrey Pines in 2021. He finished T3 last week at the American Express and carded a T7 at the ZOZO championship. Last week Schauffele scored an Albatross on the Par-5 5th by long driving his first shot and draining his second (225 yards) into the hole while carrying over the water.

Taylor Montgomery +2500

Taylor Montgomery played some awesome rounds at the American Express last week before carding a lone 5th spot. He also finished solo 3 at the Fortinet earlier this season. Montgomery jumped to 9th place in FedEx Cup points and climbed the OWGR list to No. 52. His head-turning stat this season so far may be the fact that he’s played the weekend in all of the events he’s been in this season. He does have a T57 among his nine starts this season but he’s T15 or better in the other eight outings.

Others: Sahith Theegala (+5000) has shown how good of a player he can be with four finishes of T6 or better so far this season. He was T1 at the QBE Shootout a few weeks ago. As mentioned above – if you’re looking for a true-value pick, keep an eye on last year’s winner Luke List (+8000) as his short game and putter could once again propel him to the win.
