The 2020 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship Main Event is scheduled to begin this Saturday (October 3rd 2020) after the conclusion of the play-in stage.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be a LAN event. I’m sure a lot of you will be glad to hear that, as this way there will be zero concerns about lag, which has happened with online events.
The event will be hosted at the Pudong Football Stadium in Shanghai, China.
This is easily the biggest eSports tournament of the year and will feature the top LoL players from around the world. A total of 16 teams will participate in the Main Event.
Out of the 16 teams, 12 teams received invites, while four teams will earn a spot through the play-in stage, which is currently ongoing, so we don’t know the full field in the event yet.

2020 LoL World Championship Group Stage Format and Schedule
The group stage starts on October 3rd 2020 and will run until October 11th 2020.
Each team will play against every team in their group twice in a double round robin format. Each game will only be a best-of-one match. The top two teams will qualify for the playoffs.
The playoffs begin on October 15th and the finals will be held on Halloween (October 31st 2020).
Eight teams will qualify for the single-elimination playoffs. However, in the playoffs, every match is going to be a best-of-five series rather than a best-of-one match.
