More and more live sports are returning to action in June. Most notably are some high profile international soccer leagues, NASCAR and golf’s PGA Tour. Yet, eSports is still capturing the attention of mainstream bettors.
In the absence of most live sports and sporting events in March and April, betting interest in eSports began to increase. Video games such as CS:GO, Fortnite and League of Legends (LoL) have always attracted a large base of fans. Professional competitions for those video games have been taking place for years with millions awarded in prize money.
More recently, online sportsbooks started adding betting options for eSports competitions to help fill the void and they attracted quite a bit of action from starved sports bettors. That trend is expected to continue even as mainstream sports slowly return to action.
The overall popularity of eSports and betting on these events prompted the popular sports betting website Scores & Stats to increase its coverage with a daily live data feed for eSports.
Once there are live basketball, hockey and baseball games to bet on, the focus on eSports is bound to decrease somewhat. Yet the inroads they made over the past several weeks should keep them as a very viable betting option in the months and years to come.
One of the big stories from recent eSports action was the first ever Mid-Season Cup. A competition between Top Esports and FunPlus Phoenix in the championship match highlighted the first ever event made of China’s LoL Pro League. Top Esports went on to win 3-1 this past Sunday.
Other competing teams included JD Gaming and Invictus of the China LoL Pro League. Also included in the competition was South Korea LoL Champions’ T1, Gen.G, Dragon X and Damwon Gaming.
The Mid-Season Cup was played entirely online because of the coronavirus health crisis. Teams did participate from the LPL Arena in Shanghai and LoL Park in Seoul. In earlier competition, reigning world champions FunPlus Phoenix beat JD Gaming as the current LPL Champion in one semifinal matchup. In the other semifinal, Top Esports swept Gen. G as the only remaining South Korean team.
Sunday’s finals featured the return of the blind pick mode. All of the tournament’s best-of-five series started with blind pick as opposed to the standard pick-ban sequence. Top Esports won the series opener before losing the second match to FunPlus Phoenix. The eventual champs regained their playing form by winning the next two matches to close things out with the 3-1 series victory.
The Mid-Season Cup competition was part of the larger Mid-Season Streamathon. The entire event was designed to raise money to help battle the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.
