NBA Today’s Free Pick Against the Spread | Suns at Spurs

For the second time in a week, the Phoenix Suns will take on the San Antonio Spurs. These Western Conference foes met on Monday with the Spurs eking out a 120-118 victory over the Suns on MLK day.

SPURS VS. SUNS - FULL GAME HIGHLIGHTS - JAN. 20

Despite both teams being below .500, they remain in playoff contention for the 8 seed in an otherwise loaded Western Conference. Somebody has to take the 8 seed and the first round demolition from the Lakers that comes with it. Might as well be one of these squads.

Game:  Phoenix Suns (18-26, 22-21-1 ATS) at San Antonio Spurs (20-23, 18-24-1 ATS)

When:  8:35 PM ET, Friday, January 24th, 2020

Where:  AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas

Current Line:  Spurs -4   Total:  229.5

TV Coverage: FS Arizona, FS Southwest

The Spurs enter the game looking to win their 4th in a row. They are coming off a 121-117 victory over the Pelicans when they were able to hold off the 4th quarter Zion Williamson assault to secure the win. The team was led by LaMarcus Aldridge who scored 32 points to go along with 14 rebounds and 2 blocks.

This Spurs team differs from Spurs teams of the past in how they approach the game. While the offense has been relatively effective on a night to night basis, the defense leaves plenty to be desired. They currently rank at 26th in points allowed per contest and almost 115 PPG checking in at 114.7.

The Suns enter the contest losing their last 2 and 6 of their last 10. Their last contest was an ugly 112-87 loss to the Pacers on their home floor. Kelly Oubre Jr. led the team with 17 points and 9 rebounds, but overall it was a pretty dismal effort all around.

With Tuesday's loss aside, this team is normally solid on offense. They are led by Devin Booker who averages 26.5 points per game. The team averages 113 points per game, which is good for 10th in the league.

Suns Need a New Ending on Defense

While the offense works and can even be considered good, the defense is a completely different story. The defense ranks toward the bottom of the league at 114 per game and at times seems they cannot even attempt to stop or slow anyone down.

As for handicapping this game and what I'm playing.

The Spurs continue to often get bet like they are the Spurs of years past. This team has been a big disappointment this season going 18-24-1 versus the number costing their backers some serious cash.

This Suns team isn't good but they are young. The teams overall are pretty similar with good offensive numbers and terrible defensive stats.

The +4 the Suns are getting hasn't moved much on the NBA odds list since it opened with only Heritage offering +3.5 and Codere offering +4.5. So despite the "look" of this contest saying take the Spurs, some sharper backers are playing the Suns.

Devin Booker has a rebound game from the last contest dud he laid. I'm going to bet on the Suns for this contest at +4 in what should be a close contest most of the way.
