Time to head South of the border for the Mayakoba Golf Classic. The event, held since 2007, takes advantage of warmer weather at the El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
The warmer climate seems to have brought out another strong field for the Classic. The fields have been growing stronger yearly since the tournament moved from being an alternative event complete with FedEx points and an increased purse.

Two of the stronger players in the field this year, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka, are some of the favorites to win outright. Thomas comes in as the only player below +1000 at +600 while Koepka rids in at +1000.
Tony Finau and Abraham Ancer round out the favorites – both coming in at +1800. But like many tournaments held this time of year, value picks are spread out throughout the field! About those value betting picks. Once you get past +1800 you start seeing some familiar names! Marc Leishman comes in at +4500 and Sebastian Munoz is at +5000. El Camaleon Golf Club plays as both a classic style course as well as a scenic venue that’s perfect for dramatic in/out shots on TV. The course is shorter by PGA Tour standards and over the last five years has offered up 18-21 under winning scores.
Four of the last six Mayakopa Classics have been won by one stroke. The other two of the six ended with a 2 stroke win and one playoff.
Look for players to try and take advantage of several of the par-five and par-four holes for shaving strokes as normal. But, they can do it at El Camaleon with regularity. For instance, the No. 13 par-five hole plays just over 530 yards and averages a birdie 54% of the time.
On the other hand, this Greg Norman-designed course makes full use of doglegs and tight landing areas.
The factors this week will include possible ocean winds and slow greens. There is a chance for rain during the weekend rounds.
2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic Predictions
Harris English +1600
Harris English is a former winner of this event and has been playing great golf for the last several months. He’s strung together several top-ten and top-twenty finishes. That includes finishing sole 4th at the U.S. Open.
Rickie Fowler +2500
Rickie Fowler has been a bit inconsistent this season but this course may fit his game perfectly. Fowler. He finished T29 at the Masters, but has been playing well with his irons. If he can stay low and out of the wind off the tee he could take advantage of the shorter holes.
Justin Thomas +600
It’s hard to get past Thomas at +600 as the favorite. He is the strongest player in the field and should tackle El Camaleon with ease. I’m listing him as an obvious favorite but I think Fowler and English will play just as strong and their value is better.
Others I Like
Brendon Todd – Stewart Cink: Brendon Todd is the defending champ and comes in to defend his title at +5000. Todd carved up this course last year and very well could repeat. Gary Woodland comes in at +5500 and finished second here in 2017.
