PGA Preview: 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and picks

The 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic is in its second year on the PGA schedule with some bigger names in the field. Nate Lashley will have to defend his title against players such as favorite Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler, and others.

One name that is missing this week is Dustin Johnson, who won the 2020 Travelers Championship on Sunday. Johnson was one of my picks along with DeChambeau who carded a T6. You can check out the article for some additional insight by clicking the link above.

Johnson is not in the field this week which opens the door for players such as Tyrrell Hatton, coming in at +1400, along with Reed. Hatton placed T3 at the RBC Heritage two weeks ago. Here’s how the favorites coming in at or below +1800 break down this week.

Defending Classic winner Nate Lashley (+12500) returns. Last year he powered through the field carding a six-under win over Doc Redman, who is also in the field at +4500.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic has been rescheduled from its original date of May 28-31. The course (Detroit Golf Club) remains the host. The Detroit Golf Club features two Donald Ross-designed links. The South Course and the North Course, which is the home to the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The course was upgraded to host a PGA event, but still features classic styling with lots of bunkers and water hazards. Fairways are mostly flat with well-manicured out of bounds areas. Last year the course offered up the lowest cut-line (five-under) since 2016.

Top picks to win the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Bryson DeChambeau +600

I’m riding with Bryson DeChambeau again this week at +600 as he’s proving to be the best player on Tour for the time being.

I talked about his muscle gain during the COVID-19 break and how that’s improved his driving distance.

That aside, his finishing numbers can’t be ignored. Since play returned, he’s gone T3, T8, and T6. In all, he’s finished T10 or better in nine of the twelve events he’s played in this season.

Viktor Hovland +2000

Norway’s Viktor Hovland comes in at +2000 riding a nice three tournament return.

Since play resumed, he’s improved his finishes going T23, T21, and a T11 last week at the Travelers. He won the Puerto Rico Open just before the COVID-19 hiatus.

Jason Day +5000

I’m probably out on a limb here. Jason Day has had a rough season so far with four missed cuts. However, his finish at the Travelers (T46) showed massive gains in confidence and play.

He finished all four rounds in the ’60s which is something that has been lacking from his game this season.

He’s not back to 100% yet, but a softer field, when compared to the last three weeks, could play into his favor.

Others I like to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic

I can’t ignore Webb Simpson at +1000. Rickie Fowler comes in at +2800 following a head-scratching season thus far with several missed cuts. Both Simpson and Fowler should be able to take advantage of the player-friendly design of the Detroit Golf Club.
