The World Golf Championship (WGC) Workday Championship moves from Mexico to Florida due to COVID-19. The field for WGC events is limited to a mix of players from the top-Tours around the world and the top-fifty players in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).
That means the saying that “any player can pull out a win during any given tournament” applies in full. This is a packed field led by Dustin Johnson as the favorite coming in at +600. Johnson holds onto the No. 1 OWGR ranking this week following his T8 finish last week at the GENESIS Open.
Like last week, Johnson is trailed by Jon Rahm at +900 and Rory McIlroy at +1600. Rahm holds onto the No. 2 OWGR spot again from last week but McIlroy dropped from No. 7 to No. 8 on the rankings released on February 21st.
Every player coming in at +1800 and under is in the OWGR top-ten. Here are the top-five favorites according to Intertops.
Dustin Johnson +600
Jon Rahm +900
Rory McIlroy +1600
Xander Schauffele +1600
Patrick Cantlay +1800
Justin Thomas +1800
2021 WGC Workday Championship Preview
Where: Bradenton, Florida
Course: The Concession Golf Club
Format: Stroke Play
Par: 72
Length: 7,470
When: February 25 –28, 2021
Purse: $10.5 Million.
TV Coverage: Golf Channel/NBC
The Concession Golf Club is a classic Jack Nicklaus designed course. The layout takes full advantage of the gently rolling terrain, natural grass areas, and tree-lined fairways. It’s beautiful, has a classic look, and it’s a hard course to play.
Water comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes with six dozen bunkers. The greens are well protected as are all landing areas forcing players to carefully judge their tee-shots. Greens are medium to large with undulations.
The course is not seaside, it’s located a few miles inland but sometimes the wind can come into play. Heading into the opening rounds the weather looks sunny with highs in the mid-80s. Bottom line – even with nice weather; the Concession Golf Club will demand plenty of finesse this week.

2021 WGC Workday Championship Predictions
Xander Schauffele +1600
Xander Schauffele is on fire in 2021. He’s played in eight events and finished T5 or better in five of them! In case you’re wondering about the other three tournaments he’s played in so far in 2021, he was T17, T17, and T15 respectively. That’s eight tournaments where he’s been well inside the top-twenty.
Tony Finau +2000
Last week Tony Finau missed a chance to capture a playoff win at the GENESIS Open against Max Homa. Finau has been so close to a win the last few seasons that one would have to think it’s just a matter of time. In 2021 he’s already finished second at the GENESIS, finished T2 at the Farmers Open, and was fourth at the American Express.
Daniel Berger +2800
Daniel Berger took last week off following his win at Pebble Beach two weeks ago. He has two recent wins on the PGA Tour and has carded seven finishes in the top-five over the last twelve months. This year (2021) Berger has his Peeble Beach win as well as a T7 at the Sony Open and a sole tenth place finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Others I Like: This is what I said about Dustin Johnson last week – he’s the favorite for a reason. But there are too many great players in this select field for him to run away with it. A nice value player is Harris English at +6000. English has a nice 2021 resume to date; he won the Tournament of Champions, was fourth at the U.S. Open, and T5 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
