The Way Too Early Betting Odds to Win 2020 NFL MVP

With NFL free agency right around the corner starting Wednesday, March 18, avid NFL bettors have taken a renewed interest in the available NFL betting futures at their favorite online sportsbooks.

When it comes to NFL player futures, odds to win next season’s MVP honors always draws some interest.

Unlike futures odds to win a conference title or Super Bowl, MVP odds tend to stay rather stable throughout the entire offseason. The main takeaway from any NFL futures odds for MVP is a list laden with quarterbacks with only one or two top contenders.

Staying true to form, this year’s betting odds have nine quarterbacks in the Top 10. Carolina Panthers’ running back Christian McCaffrey is 10th at +2500 odds.

NFL MVP Trends

– A quarterback has been named MVP in 12 of the last 13 seasons

– Lawrence Taylor was the last defensive player to win (1986)

– Mark Mosely was the only kicker to win MVP (1982)

– A wide receiver has never been named MVP

– Since 1997, Peyton Manning was the only player to win back-to-back MVP awards

NFL MVP Betting Odds

Using the above list of trends as a guide, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be the top-valued pick as a +600 favorite. There is a ton of value in that number that will only come down once the new season gets underway.

After winning league MVP in his second NFL season, he has left an indelible mark on the voters with his MVP honors in this past season’s Super Bowl. There is a very good chance that Mahomes and the Chiefs will pick up where they left off following their thrilling Super Bowl LIV victory against San Francisco.

Even if Kansas City does not repeat as Super Bowl Champs, Mahomes is very likely to put up enough gaudy stats to sway enough voters his way to win his second MVP trophy.

Barring any kind of sustained time missed due to injury, this is shaping up as Patrick’s award to lose. He is well on his way to becoming the next dominant quarterback in the NFL bar none.

Baltimore Raven quarterback Lamar Jackson enjoyed a breakout season to earn MVP honors in 2019. He is a close second on the list to win again at +650 odds.

Not to take anything away from everything he was able to accomplish leading his team to a second-straight AFC North Division title, the sting of that stunning loss to Tennessee in the Ravens’ first playoff game as the No. 1 seed will not go away as quick as Jackson hopes.

This guy is on track for a great NFL career but there is still a good chance he takes a step backward in 2020. Defensive coordinators on every NFL team he faces next season are already game-planning against him.

The odds drop to +900 for Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson.Related Link: NFL Draft Betting – Where’s the Value?

You could consider Russell as the wild card in this race. He was lead horse earlier in last year’s race, and he should get another quick start out of the gate in 2020.

Houston’s Deshaun Watson is next at +1400 followed by Philadelphia’s Carson Wentz to round out the Top 5.

Wentz was the MVP frontrunner in the Eagles’ run to a Super Bowl title in 2017 before he got hurt. If he can stay healthy for a full season and play at the form he has shown in the past, there is some solid value in those odds as a true dark horse in the race.
