Preview

Atlanta United can't undo their most recent match against an Ohio team, so the Five Stripes are looking forward to rebounding at FC Cincinnati on Wednesday.

Atlanta (15-11-3, 48 points) tried to keep pace Saturday with Eastern Conference leader New York City FC but instead lost for the second time this season to 11th-place Columbus, 3-1, to give the Crew a sweep of the two-game season series.

More startling was that Atlanta was ahead 1-0 but allowed three second-half goals, handing the Five Stripes their first home loss when after leading at the half (7-1-1).

"I think we deserved this, not just (Saturday) because of our performance but leading up to the game with the way we trained," Atlanta midfielder Julian Gressel said. "Definitely not worth No. 1 in the East. All we can do is focus on Wednesday, and hopefully prepare better and then play better and get three points."

Atlanta, which has clinched a playoff berth, is third, nine points back of NYCFC and four off the pace of the Philadelphia Union with one game in hand (five matches to four).

Cincinnati (6-21-3, 21 points) has been long eliminated in the East, but the expansion team showed resolve in going to Montreal and beating the Impact 1-0 on Saturday for its first shutout since March 24. That ended a nine-game winless streak (0-8-1) since July 18.

"Wednesday we're going to be there with the same mentality, focused all on the same page again," FCC midfielder Emmanuel Ledesma said.

It was also the first win after a tie and four losses since Ron Jans became FCC's third coach of the season on Aug. 10.

"In six weeks' time, I realized how much the team and the staff had to suffer this season because of the losses and changes," Jans said.

Atlanta forward Josef Martinez will try to extend his league-record goal streak to 15 games. He shared the previous mark of nine with Diego Valeri.
