Preview

With a crowded Western Conference playoff picture, Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United FC both eye valuable points when the teams meet on Sunday in St. Paul, Minn.

While no team can catch Los Angeles FC in the West, Salt Lake (14-11-4, 46 points) and Minnesota (13-10-6, 45 points) both are in position for a top-four finish and first-round bye that comes with it.

United seeks its first ever playoff berth.

"With how difficult the West is, the first goal should be qualifying," Minnesota defender Ike Opara told his club's official website. "Then we can try and set the goal of hosting a home game ... But, we have to take care of game-to-game before we entertain that idea."

Minnesota can do that by bouncing back from Wednesday's frustrating 2-0 road loss to Houston, which was winless in its previous seven contests. The defeat ended a 1-2-0 road stretch and dropped MUFC to 3-3-3 over its last nine.

The good news for United was that it returns home where it's 8-1-5 in 2019, and amid a 5-0-2 stretch. Minnesota has also won both home meetings versus Salt Lake.

Salt Lake has alternated losses and wins over its last four games. RSL also faces a quick turnaround after winning 1-0 over San Jose at home Wednesday. Midfielder Damir Kreilach scored his fifth goal of the season in the 75th minute for a win that propelled RSL to second-place in the West.

"Every game for us is a new challenge," Kreilach told Salt Lake's official website. "Every game we try to get three points and now we go to Minnesota and get three points, too."

Minnesota star Darwin Quintero, who has eight goals but was held out Wednesday, scored in the 57th minute and Marcelo Silva equalized in the 71st for Salt Lake when these teams played to a 1-1 draw at Utah on July 20.
