San Francisco Giants vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview and Predictions 04-23-2019 in MLB

The suddenly hot Toronto Blue Jays host the San Francisco Giants for a two-game interleague series beginning Tuesday with top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the verge of making his major league debut. Guerrero, who reportedly showed up at spring training 40 pounds overweight before sustaining an oblique injury, has hit .331 with 43 home runs, 150 walks and a .946 OPS in 1,062 at-bats since making his professional debut in 2016.

"You can see, it's obvious that I'm ready," Guerrero, a third baseman, told reporters. "I can't control what happens, I can only control what I can do myself." After starting the season 4-10, Toronto has won seven of nine and four straight after a three-game sweep at Oakland over the weekend by a combined 20-6. San Francisco (9-14) is 4-9 on the road after losing two of three to Washington and Pittsburgh to start an eight-game trek as it continues to struggle offensively with the third-fewest runs in baseball entering the week. The Giants' Jeff Samardzija gets the call Tuesday and will oppose rookie Trent Thornton in a matchup of right-handers who struggled in their last outings.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 2.91 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Trent Thornton (0-2, 5.40)

Samardzija allowed four runs, five hits (two homers) and two walks with seven strikeouts over five innings of a 9-6 loss at Washington on Wednesday. The 34-year-old Indiana native fared better in his first three starts of the season, permitting four runs (three earned) and 12 hits across 16 2/3 innings with 13 strikeouts and six walks. Toronto's Eric Sogard is 6-for-11 versus Samardzija, who hasn't faced the Blue Jays since 2015.

Thornton yielded four runs, six hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings of a 4-1 loss at Minnesota on Wednesday. The 25-year-old North Carolina native, who was drafted in 2015 by Houston in the fifth round, allowed five runs and eight hits (three homers) in his previous start - an 11-7 setback against Tampa Bay on April 12. Thornton's major league career began in fine fashion as he permitted two runs and five hits with 15 strikeouts over 10 2/3 innings in a pair of no-decisions at Cleveland and versus Detroit.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto SS Freddy Galvis (.315, five home runs 12 RBIs) left Sunday's 5-4 victory in the ninth inning with a leg injury and is day-to-day.

2. San Francisco C Buster Posey (.227) homered in Sunday's 3-2 victory at Pittsburgh for the first time in 237 at-bats - the longest drought of his career.

3. Sogard is 9-for-22 with five RBIs in five games since making his Blue Jays debut April 16.
